Magnitude 4.1 Earthquake Shakes Murcia Region
MURCIA, Spain – A magnitude 4.1 earthquake struck the Murcia region of southeastern Spain on Sunday morning, sending tremors across the area and neighboring provinces, though no injuries or structural damage have been reported.

The National Geographic Institute (IGN) recorded the seismic event at 11:59 a.m. local time. The tremor, which had a shallow depth of five kilometers, had its epicenter located between the municipality of Librilla and the district of Barqueros in the center of the autonomous community.
Lasting only a few seconds, the earthquake was felt widely throughout the Murcia region and was also perceptible in the neighboring provinces of Alicante and Albacete. According to the IGN’s intensity scale, which ranges from one to ten, the shaking reached a level four intensity in the Murcia districts of Javalí Nuevo, Mula, and La Puebla.

The tremor hit at a shallow depth of 5 km at 09:59 GMT, centered roughly 22 km away from Murcia.

Librilla, situated approximately 30 kilometers from the regional capital, lies within a tectonic trough known as the Lower Guadalentín basin. This territory is characterized by notable seismic activity and is bordered by significant geological structures, including the Alhama de Murcia fault. This same fault line was responsible for the devastating double earthquake in the nearby town of Lorca in May 2011, which registered magnitudes of 4.7 and 5.1, resulting in nine fatalities and extensive material damage.

Residents reported feeling the tremors particularly strongly on the upper floors of buildings, with some noting that household items such as televisions and decorative vases shook noticeably. The Emergency Coordination Center of the Murcia Region received more than 80 calls through the 112 emergency number from concerned citizens alerted by the sudden jolt. Authorities have confirmed that, at this time, there are no reports of personal injuries or property damage resulting from the seismic activity.
