Palma de Mallorca, Spain — A violent robbery in broad daylight has shocked residents of Palma de Mallorca after a violent Algerian young man was arrested for assaulting an elderly woman and stealing her mobile phone.
According to the Policía Nacional, the incident took place at around 10:00 a.m. on Sunday outside a clinic in the city center. The suspect allegedly approached the victim on a bicycle and asked her for a cigarette as a pretext.
Attack Escalates Quickly
What appeared to be a simple request quickly turned violent. As the woman searched for her cigarette pack, the Algerian man reportedly grabbed her mobile phone. When she resisted, a struggle ensued during which the attacker allegedly struck her and dragged her several meters along the ground before managing to break free and flee the scene.
The suspect abandoned his bicycle and escaped on foot, leaving the victim shaken. She immediately alerted police and provided a description of the attacker.
Swift Police Response and Arrest
Police patrols launched a search operation in the surrounding area. Within minutes, officers located a man at a nearby bus stop who matched the description given by the victim.
During a search, officers found a mobile phone in his possession matching the stolen device. When police attempted to recover it, the suspect allegedly tried to snatch it back and then fled, prompting a brief pursuit that ended in his arrest.
Violent Behavior After Arrest
Authorities reported that the Algerian man continued to behave aggressively during transport to the police station, allegedly kicking and spitting at officers.
Further checks revealed that the individual had previously been arrested multiple times for similar offenses and was subject to a restraining order prohibiting his presence on the island.
