CEUTA, Spain – An incident on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, in Ceuta, Spain, has sparked widespread outrage after a group of migrants removed a dolphin calf from the water and beat it to death on El Trampolín beach, with the violent episode captured on video and verified by local and national media, including El Faro de Ceuta. The group found the calf swimming disoriented near the shore and, taking advantage of the shallow water, pulled it onto the sand, where one individual struck it on the head with a stick.

Although a public cleaning worker from the Ecoservicios service intervened to warn them that they should not handle the animal and that specialists should be called, the calf had already been seriously injured and later died from the impact. Those involved then carried the lifeless body away from the beach toward the breakwater area, treating it as a symbol of victory.
The footage has been widely shared on social media by content creators and internet users, who have condemned the abuse of marine species that enjoy strict legal protection in Spain. Citizens and local groups have demanded that authorities, including the Guardia Civil’s Nature Protection Service, fully identify those responsible for the act of animal cruelty.
The incident has intensified scrutiny of the migrant presence on Ceuta’s beaches, where tensions have been high for weeks, and has added to growing demands for stronger law enforcement and protection of public spaces. The Guardia Civil has opened an investigation, though no arrests have been reported. Animal rights organisations have condemned the killing, calling it a horrific act that should not go unpunished.

The dolphin calf’s death has become a symbol of the broader social breakdown in the autonomous city, where coexistence and public order have been severely strained since the mass migrant entry in July. The footage has been circulating widely on social media, with many calling for the perpetrators to be identified and prosecuted. Local authorities have not yet issued a formal statement on the incident, but the Seprona is expected to lead the investigation. The public has been urged to come forward with any information that could assist in identifying those responsible.
The dolphin calf’s killing has deepened the sense of crisis in Ceuta, where residents and authorities are already grappling with multiple challenges. The incident is being treated as a serious violation of animal protection laws, which carry significant penalties under Spanish legislation. The investigation will focus on identifying the individuals shown in the video and determining the full circumstances of the event.
