Pedro Sánchez Starts Summer Holidays at Lanzarote Official Residence
LANZAROTE, Spain – Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has arrived in the Canary Islands to begin his summer vacation at the official residence of La Mareta, located in the coastal town of Costa Teguise. The head of government touched down at the César Manrique-Lanzarote Airport around midday on Saturday.

According to regional media outlets, Sánchez and his family landed at 1:07 p.m. local Canary time aboard a Spanish Air Force Falcon jet. Following their arrival, the party was transported by van directly to the La Mareta estate, marking another summer retreat to the location for the prime minister and his family.
The Royal Residence of La Mareta holds a unique historical background. It was originally commissioned by the late King Hussein of Jordan, who gifted the property to then-King Juan Carlos I of Spain in 1980. The monarch subsequently ceded the estate to Spain’s National Heritage agency to be used for official state purposes. Over the years, the secluded and highly secure residence has served as a holiday retreat for the Spanish royal family, as well as former prime ministers including José María Aznar and José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero.

However, the prime minister’s retreat comes amid a backdrop of heightened public and political scrutiny. Sánchez recently faced strong criticism from citizens and political opponents after sharing his personal summer music playlist on the social media platform TikTok. Critics argued that the lighthearted post was tone-deaf and insensitive given the severe wildfires currently ravaging multiple regions of Spain, as well as the recent massive and chaotic migration influx in the North African enclave of Ceuta.
