MADRID, Spain – A 13-year-old Moroccan teenager housed in one of Ceuta’s minors’ centres has tested positive for Mpox, previously known as monkeypox, health sources have confirmed. This is the first confirmed case of the disease in the autonomous city.

The minor is currently isolated in the centre where he is being housed and is receiving treatment, with his situation being monitored by health services that have adopted the corresponding measures to prevent further contagions, according to the same sources.
The positive result was confirmed on Thursday by the Carlos III Health Institute after health authorities suspected the teenager could be infected and sent samples for analysis. The youth is one of the minors who arrived in Ceuta during the mass entries registered at the end of July.

After symptoms compatible with the disease were detected, the diagnostic procedure was activated and the samples were sent to the state reference body, which has finally confirmed the infection. Until now, Ceuta had not registered any cases of Mpox since the start of the outbreak in Spain.
