Ceuta Police: Filthy Mattresses for Us, New Ones for Migrants
MADRID, Spain – National Police officers deployed to Ceuta to deal with the migration crisis have long been denouncing the undignified conditions in which they are working, with many housed in old military barracks that had been closed for years and were reopened in haste without meeting necessary hygiene and health standards. The JUPOL union protested on Friday by publishing two images on social media comparing the old mattresses on which officers housed in those military barracks sleep and those the government is installing in tents to accommodate migrants, which are completely new and still covered in protective plastic.

In a message accompanying the images, the union stated that one image is worth more than a thousand words, contrasting on the left how some National Police officers deployed to Ceuta sleep and on the right the conditions of the camp installed for the migrants who invaded Ceuta on 30 and 31 July. The union said it was not saying that migrants do not have the right to sleep on a new and comfortable mattress, but that it is curious that they are told there is no money to offer dignified accommodation conditions for officers while there is money to buy new mattresses for migrants. It added that many officers are sleeping in old barracks ceded by the Ministry of Defence that had been closed for many years, on old, uncomfortable and filthy mattresses.

JUPOL spokesperson Aarón Rivero stated that there can be no prevention on paper while police officers work exhausting shifts, are housed in undignified conditions, lack basic services and are exposed to health risks, adding that from the beginning the union has been demanding medical check-ups for officers returning from Ceuta and now there is a new case of scabies.

He said the union has also requested dignified accommodation, measures to prevent contagion and something as basic as toilets for the police officers at Playa del Trampolín, stressing that they are not asking for privileges but for the law to be complied with. The union recalled that for this and many other reasons and for non-compliance with occupational risk prevention regulations, it has filed complaints against the administration in various judicial bodies.
