Barcelona Officials Urge Calm As Deadly Zona Franca Shooting Linked To Organized Crime
BARCELONA, Spain — Local authorities in Barcelona are urging residents to remain calm following a fatal shooting in the Zona Franca industrial area, attributing the deadly violence to a settling of scores within international organized crime networks rather than local neighborhood disputes.
Violent Mass Confrontation In Barcelona’s Zona Franca Leaves Multiple Injured
The fatal incident occurred on Sunday in an interior courtyard on Carrer Minería, where the victim was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Bystanders, alongside responding officers from the Mossos d’Esquadra and medical personnel from the Emergency Medical System (SEM), attempted to resuscitate the victim, but he was pronounced dead minutes later. The Catalan police have cordoned off the area and deployed public order units to intensify surveillance while the gunman remains at large. The Criminal Investigation Division has assumed control of the inquiry, which is currently being conducted under strict judicial secrecy.
Raquel Gil, Deputy Mayor and Councilor for the Sants-Montjuïc district, addressed the media to appeal for tranquility among the residents of the neighboring Marina district. She emphasized that security forces have determined the violence is directly linked to score-settling associated with international organized crime. Consequently, she stressed that these lethal incidents are entirely disconnected from the daily dynamics and social fabric of the local community. The area has seen a recent surge in lethal violence, following a similar fatal shooting on May 16, where a man was killed in the street in the same vicinity with at least one gunshot to the head before the assailant fled the scene.

In anticipation of the La Marina del Port neighborhood festivals scheduled to begin this weekend, local law enforcement is taking proactive measures to ensure public safety. Gil detailed that the Guardia Urbana and the Mossos d’Esquadra are working in close coordination to reinforce their operational presence in the area. The joint strategy is designed to guarantee the robust police visibility demanded by the residents and to restore a sense of security during the festive period.
At the regional level, the Catalan Ministry of Interior is also reviewing its security strategies for the affected zone. Interior Minister Núria Parlon announced that she will convene with the Barcelona City Council following the conclusion of Pope Leo XIV’s apostolic visit to the city to analyze and determine the necessary reinforcements. Speaking at a public event on Monday, Parlon suggested that expanding the scope of “Plan Kanpai,” a targeted security initiative, into the Zona Franca could serve as a highly effective tool to combat the escalating criminal activity in the district.
