Rescued African Migrant Held for Violent Attack on German Tourist in Almería

ALMERÍA, Spain — The Spanish National Police have rescued and arrested a 21-year-old Sub-Saharan immigrant following a violent sexual assault against a 44-year-old German tourist near the mouth of the Andarax River in Almería. The dramatic incident, which culminated in a sea rescue, has prompted a major law enforcement response and an ongoing criminal investigation.

The attack occurred at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Sunday. According to police reports, the suspect allegedly armed himself with a knife and forced his way into the camper van where the victim was staying. The assailant subjected the woman to a brutal assault. Although the attack did not result in penetration, the sheer violence of the encounter left the victim with severe facial disfigurement and multiple bodily injuries.

The assault was abruptly interrupted by a vigilant bystander in the vicinity. Upon hearing the woman’s screams and witnessing a naked man attacking the victim, the individual repeatedly honked their vehicle’s horn to disrupt the assault and alert the surrounding area, immediately contacting the National Police.

When the first police patrols arrived, they found the victim in a critical state, covered in wounds. She was urgently transported to the Materno Infantil Hospital in Almería, where medical staff immediately activated the official protocol for sexual assault victims to ensure comprehensive care and forensic evidence collection.

Meanwhile, Scientific Police units cordoned off the crime scene to preserve evidence. During the search of the perimeter, an officer spotted the suspect hiding in the nearby vegetation. Upon being discovered, the man fled toward the coastline and plunged into the sea. He swam approximately 100 meters offshore before succumbing to exhaustion and beginning to sink beneath the waves.

Five police officers swiftly initiated a rescue operation in challenging sea conditions. The effort was complicated by the suspect’s semi-conscious state and inability to cooperate. Once pulled from the water and brought to the shore, the officers placed the man in the recovery position, allowing him to expel a significant amount of water and gradually regain his breathing.

Following the intense operation, all five officers involved in the water rescue required medical attention for injuries sustained during the intervention. After being stabilized and evaluated at a local healthcare facility, the suspect was formally detained as the alleged perpetrator of sexual assault and bodily injury crimes.
