King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, the Princess of Asturias and Infanta Sofía boarded a vessel on Saturday in the Asturian town of Llanes to recognise the work of the fishermen’s guilds and pay tribute to sailors. During the day, which ended at the port of Llanes with a lunch with the town’s residents, Queen Letizia suffered a stumble on the deck of the boat, which the members of the royal family boarded on the occasion of the awarding of the 2026 Exemplary Village Prize to the Santa Ana Fishermen’s Guild of Llanes.
The King and Queen, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofía arrived in the town after 12.30pm, where hundreds of Llanes residents were waiting for them, welcomed by traditional Asturian bagpipes. Along their route through the town, the members of the royal family greeted the members of the board of directors of the Santa Ana Fishermen’s Guild and the members of the municipal corporation, and met with the children’s section of the El Pericote Folkloric Group of Llanes.

In front of the basilica of Santa María de la Asunción, also called Santa María del Conceyu, one of the few Asturian temples in the Gothic style, they witnessed the dance of El Pericote, a folkloric representation of the traditional Asturian dance. They then unveiled a commemorative plaque in front of the façade of the chapel of Santa Ana, patron saint of the sailors of Llanes, and entered the interior of the temple, the historic seat of the Fishermen’s Guild. The royal family boarded the vessel Nuevo Sandra María in tribute to “the fishermen who have sailed the Cantabrian Sea generation after generation” and to the women who have worked in the canning factories, as highlighted by the guild’s cultural activities coordinator, María Consuelo Perela.
