MADRID, Spain – Felipe VI and Letizia have said that with their “long-desired and pending” visit to Ceuta on Tuesday they have settled a debt and that through it they want to convey “the commitment of the whole country to the future of the people of Ceuta, which is the future of Spain.” They wrote this in the Book of Honour of Ceuta City Council, where they signed after receiving the keys to the city.

“There was a debt that we settle today while conveying the closeness and affection of all of Spain,” they stated. They also noted that they have been very attentive and watchful of the very difficult circumstances the city has endured in recent months.
On this day described as historic, Spanish flags fly from most of the balconies and windows in the city centre. This is the first visit by Felipe VI and Letizia to Ceuta and comes two months after the entry of more than 80,000 migrants from Morocco by sea and over the breakwater.

The last official visit by a monarch to the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla was that of Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofía in 2007. On this occasion, the King and Queen will stay overnight in Ceuta, something that has never happened in democracy.
