MELILLA, Spain – King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia continued their historic visit to Melilla on Wednesday, where the president of the autonomous city, Juan José Imbroda, presented them with the keys to the city during an official reception at the Assembly Palace. “We need your presence for our future,” Imbroda said in a speech in which he championed Melilla’s Spanish identity and called for more forceful responses to the migration crisis of late July.

Before the event, thousands of Melilla residents received the monarchs amid cheers, applause and Spanish flags, a welcome that continued as they left the Assembly, when they again approached citizens to greet them and take photographs.
The King and Queen’s agenda continues this afternoon with a visit to the Pintor Eduardo Morillas school, scheduled for 4.15pm. Afterwards, at 5.45pm, Felipe VI and Letizia will go to the Melilla Puerto hotel to hold a meeting with representatives of Melillan society, where the traditional hand-kissing ceremony will take place and King Felipe VI will deliver a speech to close the official day.
