Tragedy In Almería: At Least 11 Dead And 19 Missing In Devastating Wildfire
ALMERÍA, Spain — A massive wildfire in the municipality of Los Gallardos in Almería has resulted in an unprecedented tragedy, leaving at least 11 people dead and 19 others missing. The blaze, which has already scorched approximately 3,150 hectares, was reportedly sparked by a fallen electrical cable and has become one of the deadliest forest fires in Spain’s recent history.

Andalusian Councilor for Presidency, Health, and Emergencies, Antonio Sanz, outlined the harrowing circumstances that led to the fatalities, describing two distinct and tragic scenarios that unfolded as the inferno rapidly advanced. In the first incident, four individuals perished inside a right-hand drive vehicle, leading authorities to believe they were likely British tourists. According to Sanz, the occupants ignored official evacuation directives and inadvertently drove into a fatal dead end.
In the second scenario, seven people died while attempting to flee the flames on foot. Sanz explained that this group, which originally consisted of nine people before two managed to escape, attempted to navigate through the thick, blinding smoke using improvised and uncoordinated routes. Tragically, their path led them into another inescapable trap. While one of the deceased in this group is believed to be a Spanish citizen, the remaining victims are suspected to be of Belgian or British origin, a detail that is still pending official confirmation. Sanz emphasized that the decision to abandon official evacuation routes in favor of uncoordinated paths through the smoke significantly exacerbated the death toll.

Regional Government of Andalusia President Juanma Moreno expressed profound sorrow over the disaster, cautioning that the number of casualties could unfortunately increase as search and rescue operations continue for the 19 missing individuals. Meanwhile, eight people sustained injuries in the blaze. Four of these victims suffered severe burns and are scheduled to be transported by helicopter from the Torrecárdenas Hospital in Almería to the Virgen del Rocío Hospital in Seville for specialized intensive care. The remaining four individuals, who sustained less severe injuries, are currently being treated at the Almería facility.
The massive firefighting effort has involved numerous emergency agencies working around the clock to contain the rapidly spreading flames. Director General of Traffic Pere Navarro confirmed that local roads affected by the fire have been reopened following overnight clearance operations by the Guardia Civil. Emphasizing the critical importance of public cooperation during such crises, Navarro issued a stark warning to citizens, urging them to strictly adhere to the instructions of emergency services and utilize only the officially established evacuation routes to prevent further loss of life.
