Barcelona Wildfire Suspect Held After Fire Forces 3 Towns into Lockdown

BARCELONA, Spain — Law enforcement authorities have arrested an African national as the presumed culprit behind a massive wildfire in the Sierra de Marina, a severe blaze that forced the confinement of three municipalities and prompted a large-scale emergency response in the Barcelona province.

The Mossos d’Esquadra detained the suspect in connection with the fire, which ravaged a heavily wooded area situated between the municipalities of Tiana and Montgat in the Maresme region. According to Núria Parlon, the Regional Minister of Interior for the Generalitat of Catalonia, preliminary investigations strongly indicate that the blaze was deliberately set. Officials confirmed that the fire originated from three distinct ignition points, a clear hallmark of arson.

The emergency response was swift and extensive, with more than 20 firefighting units deployed to the Sierra de Marina on Friday morning. The operational deployment included 16 ground-based firefighting crews and six aerial units, including helicopters and water-dropping aircraft, which were prioritized to combat the flames as the fire rapidly spread through a steep ravine. The blaze ultimately scorched an estimated 60 hectares of dense forest and vegetation.

The rapidly expanding fire generated a massive column of thick smoke that was highly visible from Barcelona and its entire metropolitan area. The severe reduction in visibility and hazardous air quality caused significant mobility disruptions along the B-20 highway. In response to the dangerous conditions, the Civil Protection agency issued a strict confinement order for the municipalities of Tiana, Sant Fost de Capcentelles, and Martorelles. The mandate also extended to the Colonia Bosc housing development and the Conreria youth hostel. Residents in these areas were urgently instructed to remain indoors with all doors and windows tightly sealed to protect themselves from the toxic smoke, and were warned against traveling or remaining outdoors.

The fire also forced the evacuation of local community facilities. The flames advanced toward the sports facilities in Tiana, including the municipal swimming pool and sports courts, which were hosting summer camps for children. Emergency crews successfully evacuated the children and staff from the premises before the fire could reach the buildings.

The Sierra de Marina is a critical natural area that borders the densely populated coastal strip of the Maresme region, an area home to approximately half a million residents. The fire’s proximity to major urban centers, including the neighboring municipalities of Badalona, Santa Coloma de Gramenet, and Sant Adrià de Besòs, heightened the urgency of the containment efforts to prevent the blaze from threatening residential zones and critical infrastructure.

As the firefighting crews continue their efforts to fully extinguish the remaining hotspots and secure the perimeter, the Mossos d’Esquadra are advancing their judicial investigation into the arrested suspect to determine the “exact motives” behind the alleged arson.
