CARTAGENA, Spain — Over 3,000 Moroccan nationals took to the streets of Cartagena in a massive demonstration to demand the official recognition of their national driving licenses and improved access to social welfare assistance. The large-scale gathering highlighted the growing frustrations within the city’s significant immigrant workforce regarding bureaucratic barriers and socioeconomic integration.
Spain Receives Record 900,000 Migrant Regularization Applications
The demonstrators, comprising a substantial portion of the foreign-born population in the southeastern port city, marched peacefully through the central avenues to voice their grievances. A primary focal point of the protest was the ongoing lack of a bilateral agreement to validate Moroccan driving permits in Spain. Many of the protesters rely on driving for their livelihoods in the region’s robust agricultural, logistics, and delivery sectors. Without recognized credentials, these workers face severe legal and professional limitations, often forcing them into informal employment or restricting their ability to commute to job sites in the sprawling agricultural zones surrounding the city.
Beyond the transportation and licensing issues, the crowd strongly advocated for equitable access to social welfare programs. The demonstrators emphasized the difficulties faced by immigrant communities in navigating the complex Spanish administrative system to secure unemployment benefits, housing assistance, and basic social services. The rally underscored the need for streamlined administrative processes that would allow documented foreign residents to fully access the social safety nets they contribute to through local taxes and social security payments.

The port city of Cartagena, located in the Murcia region, has a substantial Moroccan population that plays a critical role in the local economy. These workers are essential to the intensive agriculture of the Campo de Cartagena and the logistical operations of the city’s commercial port. The sheer size of the turnout underscores the deep-seated economic and administrative challenges facing this demographic, as they seek greater legal stability and professional mobility within the Spanish system.
Local law enforcement, including the National Police and municipal officers, monitored the march to ensure public order, which was maintained throughout the event without any reported incidents. Representatives from the local government and the regional sub-delegation have acknowledged the demonstrators’ grievances. Officials indicated that the issues raised, particularly the complex bureaucratic hurdles surrounding license validation and social assistance, will be formally brought to the attention of the central government in Madrid, as these matters fall under national jurisdiction and require international diplomatic negotiations.
