Violent Gang Attack With Machetes Rocks Barcelona’s Raval District
BARCELONA, Spain — A brutal group attack involving machetes, sticks, and flying chairs erupted on La Rambla del Raval in Barcelona on Sunday evening, marking another violent incident in the neighborhood that has increasingly concerned local residents. Approximately thirty individuals became embroiled in a tumultuous brawl, prompting a significant emergency response from the Barcelona Urban Guard.

The violence stemmed from a dispute that had occurred earlier in the day between several individuals and the owner of a restaurant on the street. According to reports, during the afternoon of June 14, a group of people of Algerian origin entered the Awami restaurant, which serves Pakistani cuisine, and became involved in an argument with the proprietor for reasons that remain under police investigation. After several tense moments, the individuals who had initiated the dispute left the premises, and the situation appeared to return to normal.
However, hours later, the group returned accompanied by additional individuals, some of whom were armed with machetes and sticks, and launched a brutal confrontation in the middle of the street. Witnesses reported seeing dozens of people fighting with punches, throwing chairs from a terrace, and threatening each other with weapons in a chaotic scene that alarmed residents and passersby. Emergency services were immediately alerted to the violent melee taking place on the upper part of La Rambla.
Multiple patrols of the Barcelona Urban Guard rapidly responded to the scene, successfully controlling the situation by separating the opposing groups and securing the perimeter to protect neighbors and pedestrians. Once the rioters were subdued, officers interviewed the restaurant owner, who provided his account of events supported by witness testimony. Four individuals who had participated in the brawl and caused damage to the establishment were subsequently arrested and taken into custody.

This violent episode is unfortunately not an isolated incident in this neighborhood of Barcelona’s Ciutat Vella district. Just days ago, and only a short distance from La Rambla del Raval, a robbery targeting a tourist ended with a chase down Carrer d’En Robador, where the thief was surrounded by a mob and beaten by the victim. In mid-May, another daylight brawl on Carrer de la Cera left a young man injured with a stab wound to his arm.
Residents of the Raval neighborhood and the broader Ciutat Vella district have expressed growing frustration with these recurring episodes of violence, stating that they are forced to live daily with fear and insecurity. The frequency of such incidents has intensified calls for enhanced security measures and community interventions to restore peace and safety to one of Barcelona’s most historic yet troubled areas.
