Teens with Machete, Bat Foiled in Valencia School Massacre Plot

FOIOS, Spain — Two teenage boys, aged 13 and 14, were apprehended by authorities after storming their secondary school in the municipality of Foios, Valencia, armed with a machete and a baseball bat, allegedly planning a mass casualty attack that left a female classmate with minor injuries.

The terrifying incident unfolded on Friday morning at the Institut Escultor Francesc Badia. The two students entered the educational facility carrying a 40-centimeter machete and a baseball bat. According to the regional Ministry of Education, a 13-year-old female student sustained minor injuries to her neck during the assault before the situation was brought under control.

School staff quickly raised the alarm, prompting an immediate and coordinated response from the Guardia Civil and the Foios Local Police. Multiple units were dispatched to the scene to secure the building and neutralize the threat. Following the intervention, officers from the Provincial Command of the Guardia Civil took the suspects into custody and launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Due to Spain’s legal framework regarding juvenile justice, the two attackers faced different immediate legal consequences. The 14-year-old suspect was formally detained by the Guardia Civil. The 13-year-old, being below the age of criminal responsibility, was not detained and was instead released into the custody of his parents.

Local media, including the newspaper Levante, reported that the teenagers had been planning a massacre inspired by the 1999 Columbine High School attack in the United States. Investigators are currently exploring reports that the boys, who reside in the neighboring town of Albalat dels Sorells, had been victims of bullying and had been plotting the violent assault for an extended period.

In the aftermath of the lockdown, the school administration issued an urgent communication to all families, informing them of the severe incident and the subsequent intervention of law enforcement agencies on campus. Sergio Ruiz, the mayor of Foios, confirmed the details of the event to the EFE news agency, noting that the rapid response of the security forces prevented a potentially much larger tragedy.
