Suspect Arrested In Barcelona For Robbing Elderly Homeowners Using Mobile Phone Translator
BARCELONA, Spain — A 29-year-old Moroccan man has been arrested by the Mossos d’Esquadra in connection with a series of violent home invasions targeting elderly residents in the Sant Andreu district of Barcelona. The suspect allegedly utilized his mobile phone’s translation application to communicate with and coerce his victims during the robberies.

The arrest was carried out on Sunday, June 7, by officers from the Citizen Security Unit of El Prat de Llobregat and the Investigation Unit of Sant Andreu. The individual was taken into custody as the presumed author of two home invasions involving forced entry and coercion. The investigation was launched following a pair of brazen assaults that occurred in May, during which the suspect employed a consistent and highly calculated modus operandi.
Investigators revealed that the suspect specifically targeted vulnerable elderly individuals who lived alone, including those with limited mobility. Operating in the early hours of the morning, the man would gain access to the residences by scaling the buildings and forcing open windows. Once inside, he would confront the terrified victims, using his smartphone’s translator app to bridge the language barrier and demand cash and valuables.
The first recorded incident occurred on May 10 at the home of an 84-year-old woman. The suspect accessed the apartment by climbing the exterior and using various tools to force his way in. Inside, he used the mobile translator to communicate his demands, ultimately stealing 1,900 euros in cash along with several pieces of jewelry.

The second attack took place in the early hours of May 19, also within the Sant Andreu district, at the residence of a 72-year-old woman. In this instance, the suspect tore the iron grille off a window to gain entry. Once inside, he again relied on his phone’s translation app to speak with the victim. He demanded a backpack to carry his stolen goods, escaping with 280 euros in cash and additional jewelry.
Following the second robbery, investigators gathered the evidence and worked to identify the intruder. The breakthrough came a few days later when the victims successfully identified the suspect during a photographic lineup. This positive identification led directly to his arrest on June 7. The suspect was subsequently brought before a judge on Monday, where his detention was formalized.
Authorities noted that the arrested man is no stranger to the justice system. The Moroccan man accumulates multiple prior police records throughout 2026 for similar forced robberies committed in the neighboring city of Badalona, as well as in the Barcelona districts of Sant Martí and Sants.
