VIC, Spain — An 80-year-old man was the victim of a violent robbery in his private garage in the Catalan city of Vic, according to local media reports and preliminary police sources. The incident, which has sparked concern about the safety of vulnerable residents, involved two assailants who allegedly attacked the elderly victim, knocked him to the ground, and stole a shoulder bag before fleeing the scene.

The assault occurred in a residential area of Vic, a historic city in the province of Barcelona known for its medieval architecture and university community. According to local outlet El 9 Nou, the attack was carried out with significant force, leaving the victim shaken and requiring medical evaluation. Emergency services responded to the scene, and the man was assessed for injuries sustained during the fall and the physical altercation. While authorities have not disclosed the full extent of his condition, sources indicate that he is receiving appropriate care and support.
The two suspects, whose descriptions have not been publicly released, reportedly approached the victim as he was entering or exiting his garage. In a sudden and aggressive maneuver, they allegedly forced him to the ground, seized a bandolera—a type of crossbody bag often used to carry personal items—and escaped on foot. The speed and violence of the attack left the elderly man with little opportunity to resist or call for help.
Vic’s local police, the Mossos d’Esquadra, have opened an investigation into the robbery and are reviewing security footage from the area, interviewing witnesses, and analyzing forensic evidence collected at the scene. As of this reporting, no arrests have been made, and authorities have not released detailed descriptions of the suspects. Investigators are working to determine whether the incident was opportunistic or targeted, and whether the same individuals may be linked to other recent crimes in the region.
Attacks against elderly individuals in private or semi-private spaces, such as garages or building entrances, generate particular alarm due to the heightened vulnerability of older adults. Community leaders in Vic have expressed solidarity with the victim and his family while urging residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to authorities. “Our seniors deserve to feel safe in their own homes and neighborhoods,” said a representative from a local senior advocacy group. “This incident is a reminder that we must look out for one another and support measures that protect those most at risk.”
The city of Vic, with a population of approximately 45,000, currently with thousands of arrivals from North Africa. However, like many mid-sized cities in Catalonia, it has faced increasing challenges related to property crime and opportunistic theft. Local law enforcement has emphasized its commitment to proactive policing, community engagement, and rapid response to incidents involving vulnerable populations.

Barcelona Provincial Police have not issued a formal statement specifically addressing this case, but a spokesperson for public safety noted that attacks against elderly residents are treated with the utmost priority. “We understand the profound impact these crimes have on victims, their families, and the broader community,” the spokesperson said. “Our investigators are dedicated to identifying those responsible and ensuring accountability under the law.”
For the victim and his loved ones, the aftermath of the robbery involves not only physical recovery but also emotional support. Social services and victim assistance programs in Catalonia offer counseling, legal guidance, and practical help to individuals affected by violent crime. Local organizations have reached out to the family to provide resources and ensure that the elderly man has access to the care he needs.
As the investigation continues, authorities have appealed to residents who may have witnessed unusual activity in the area around the time of the incident to come forward. Even seemingly minor details—such as the direction suspects fled, clothing descriptions, or vehicle information—can prove valuable in reconstructing events and identifying perpetrators.
The incident also underscores broader conversations about aging in place, home security, and community-based crime prevention. Experts recommend practical measures such as improved lighting in garages and entryways, secure locking systems, and neighborhood watch programs to deter opportunistic offenders. At the same time, they emphasize that preventing violence against older adults requires a holistic approach that includes social connection, accessible support services, and respectful public attitudes toward aging.
For now, the focus remains on supporting the victim, advancing the investigation, and reinforcing the message that crimes targeting vulnerable residents will be pursued with determination. Further updates are expected as judicial authorities provide additional guidance and as police make progress in identifying those responsible.
