Man Arrested After Attempting To Burn Police Car Outside Barcelona Station

BARCELONA, Spain — A 25-year-old Moroccan national was arrested in Barcelona after attempting to set fire to a police patrol car outside a Mossos d’Esquadra station, an incident that has triggered an intelligence investigation into potential radicalization just days before the scheduled arrival of Pope Leo XIV.

The confrontation began at approximately 2:45 a.m. on Sunday, June 7, when the man entered the police station located at Plaça d’Espanya in the Eixample district. According to reports, the individual was shouting in Arabic and vocalizing Islamist slogans while aggressively resisting identification. Officers managed to de-escalate the situation sufficiently to obtain his personal details and conduct a physical search, during which they confiscated a lighter. However, because his initial conduct inside the lobby did not meet the legal threshold for an immediate custodial arrest, officers were forced to return his personal belongings, including the lighter, and allow him to leave the premises.

Anticipating further trouble, two officers followed the man outside and monitored him from the station entrance. As the suspect walked past a row of parked patrol vehicles, he suddenly crouched down and used the lighter to attempt to ignite the tire of one of the police cars. Officers immediately intervened, issuing verbal commands to halt. The suspect ignored the orders and turned to confront and physically attack the officers. Although no police personnel were injured during the ensuing struggle, the man was successfully subdued and taken back into custody. He is now being held in the station’s cells awaiting judicial proceedings, facing charges of severe resistance and disobedience to authority.

The timing of the incident has heightened security concerns across the city. The arrest occurred just two days before Pope Leo XIV is scheduled to arrive in Barcelona on Tuesday, June 9, as part of his apostolic visit to Spain. The Mossos d’Esquadra have already implemented a comprehensive security operation to protect the pontiff and the millions of expected attendees. In light of the suspect’s behavior and the slogans he shouted inside the station, the Mossos Intelligence Unit has launched a thorough investigation into his background and actions to determine if he possesses any links to radicalized ideologies or if the incident was part of a broader threat ahead of the high-profile papal visit.
