Balearic President Accuses Sánchez Of Concealing Migration Alert Affecting The Islands
PALMA DE MALLORCA, Spain – The president of the Balearic Islands, Marga Prohens, has accused Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez of withholding sensitive information regarding a security alert warning of a high risk of mass irregular arrivals to the archipelago, stating that the regional government only learned of the existence of the alert more than a month after it was issued. The accusation came after Sánchez, during a parliamentary appearance on the Ceuta migration crisis, acknowledged that police reports existed warning of maritime arrivals to the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, but not to Ceuta.

Prohens expressed her deep concern during an extraordinary press conference on Friday, questioning why the central government had not informed the regional authorities out of institutional loyalty. She revealed that she had met personally with Sánchez on July 29, just one day before the mass entry into Ceuta, and that during their meeting, the Prime Minister assured her that irregular migration flows to the islands were decreasing and did not mention the existence of any high-risk alert.
“The Government of Spain had reports from the National Police warning of massive arrivals of irregular migrants to the coast of the Balearic Islands and did not inform the Balearic Government. We demand immediate explanations,” Prohens stated. She argued that the concealment of information compromises the security of the islands and represents a breach of institutional loyalty.

Prohens has announced that she will formally request in writing all information regarding the level of risk detected and the measures the government adopted after receiving the alert. She questioned whether Madrid activated specific plans, reinforced surveillance, or requested the assistance of Frontex to protect the maritime border.

“Would it be a grave irresponsibility to look the other way in the face of the risk of mass arrivals on our coasts. We cannot wait for it to happen to react. We are the southern border of Spain and Europe and we cannot be left unprotected,” Prohens concluded. She also reiterated the need for a specific migration plan for the islands, including a permanent reinforcement of resources for the State Security Forces.
