CEUTA, Spain – Residents of Ceuta have called on the Guardia Civil’s Nature Protection Service to investigate the capture of birds near the Ceuta reservoir, after a local resident filmed a migrant carrying a live bird inside a plastic bag in an area close to the water. According to El Faro de Ceuta, the animal had its legs tied with cable ties to prevent it from escaping, and the resident confronted the man and followed him in an attempt to assist the arrival of law enforcement, though the suspect ultimately fled without being identified or detained. The bird was eventually released and returned to its habitat after the restraints were removed.

The birds in the reservoir area are protected under Law 42/2007 on Natural Heritage and Biodiversity, which establishes the protection of wild birds regardless of whether they are classified as threatened species. The association Daubma has called on the Seprona to investigate the incident and has also warned that fishing practices are taking place in the area, in addition to the risk of fires in the reservoir’s surroundings. According to images circulated by the media, several people had lit a fire among the undergrowth for cooking or warmth.
El Faro de Ceuta has warned that such practices, particularly in vegetation-rich areas, could lead to more serious fires, and has called for greater vigilance and control to prevent damage to both species and the natural environment. The incident highlights the growing tensions and environmental concerns arising from the prolonged presence of migrants in the autonomous city, where residents have become increasingly alarmed by activities that threaten local wildlife and public safety.

The Guardia Civil has not yet commented on the matter, but the request for investigation reflects the broader strain on resources and the heightened sensitivity surrounding the migrant population’s impact on the city’s natural spaces. Conservation groups have urged authorities to take action to protect the reservoir’s ecosystem and to prevent further incidents of wildlife disturbance. The case has also drawn attention to the need for better management of the environmental consequences of the migration crisis, as the pressure on the city’s natural resources continues to mount.
