The Moroccan Who Killed A Minor In Esplugues De Llobregat Shouted ‘Allahu Akbar’
ESPLUGUES DE LLOBREGAT, Barcelona — The municipality of Esplugues de Llobregat remains in shock following the brutal killing of a minor girl on Saturday morning in a public street, an attack carried out by a Moroccan national who fled the scene before being apprehended by police. While authorities initially considered gender-based violence as a possible motive, they have since ruled out that specific line of inquiry, though they emphasize that “all hypotheses remain open” as the investigation continues under strict judicial secrecy.
Woman Killed in Stabbing Attack in Esplugues de Llobregat, Barcelona
The attack occurred at approximately 11:00 a.m. on Joan Miró Street in the Barcelona suburb. According to preliminary accounts, the victim, a resident of the nearby Finestrelles neighborhood, was walking peacefully along the street when the suspect approached without warning and began stabbing her repeatedly in the chest and neck with a bladed weapon, while shouting “Allahu Akbar” (god is great). A second man, who witnessed the assault and attempted to intervene, was also injured by the attacker before emergency services arrived.
Despite the rapid response of Mossos d’Esquadra officers and medical teams from the Emergency Medical System (SEM), the young victim could not be saved and was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect fled immediately after the attack but was pursued by police and subsequently detained. He remains in police custody pending judicial proceedings.
The Criminal Investigation Division (DIC) of the Mossos d’Esquadra has taken charge of the case, which is currently subject to investigative secrecy. While the precise motives behind the attack remain unclear, authorities confirmed that initial inquiries into a potential gender-based violence connection were discontinued after investigators found no evidence of a prior relationship between the detained man and the victim. However, officials have not confirmed whether the two individuals knew each other in any capacity, leaving the question of motive entirely unresolved.
In the wake of the tragedy, the local city council, led by the socialist and pro-immigration PSC party, issued a statement on Saturday condemning the violence and extending condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones. The municipal statement emphasized a rejection of “any form of violence” and expressed concern over “serious events that affect community coexistence and citizen security.” Authorities also appealed for prudence and responsibility, urging the public to avoid spreading unverified information out of respect for the ongoing investigation and those affected.
On Sunday, residents of the Finestrelles neighborhood gathered at the crime scene to pay tribute to the slain minor, observing a minute of silence and laying flowers at the spot where the attack occurred. Among those present was José Luis, the man who sustained minor injuries while attempting to stop the assailant. In an interview with a local television outlet, José Luis recounted that he and his wife were in the area when they heard screams. After instructing his wife to remain in their vehicle, he ascended a nearby staircase and saw a man wielding a large knife who appeared to be lunging at a woman.
José Luis called out to distract the attacker, who then turned toward him and attempted to stab him. The blade missed, and as José Luis tried to restrain the assailant, the man retreated a few meters, picked up stones from the ground, and threw them at him. As a result, José Luis sustained a small cut and several bruises on his arm, injuries he described as minor compared to the tragedy unfolding before him.
In addition to Sunday’s community tribute, the Esplugues city council has convened another public gathering in honor of the victim for Monday at 6:00 p.m. outside the municipal building. Socialist Mayor Eduard Sanz announced via social media that the council has declared two days of official mourning and has called for a minute of silence on Monday “to express condolences, solidarity with those affected, and firm rejection of violence.”
“I want to state this with absolute clarity: Esplugues unequivocally condemns these events. Violence has no place in our city. We will always defend coexistence, security, and mutual respect,” Mayor Sanz added.
The mayor, representing the PSC party, further emphasized that “Esplugues will respond with serenity, unity, and resolve: standing alongside those affected, opposing any form of violence, and reaffirming our commitment to continue working for the security and peaceful coexistence of our community.”
As the investigation proceeds, local residents continue to grapple with the shock of a violent crime that struck in the heart of their neighborhood. Police have increased patrols in the area, and community leaders have called for calm while urging cooperation with authorities. The identity of the minor victim has not been publicly disclosed in accordance with Spanish legal protections for minors, and judicial officials have requested that media outlets exercise discretion in their reporting.
The case has reignited broader conversations about public safety, integration, and the challenges of preventing spontaneous acts of violence in urban settings. While political and community leaders across the spectrum have united in condemning the attack, the unanswered questions surrounding the suspect’s motives underscore the complexity of the investigation ahead.
