MADRID, Spain – Spanish travellers have begun cancelling their planned trips to Morocco in significant numbers, as the diplomatic standoff and the incursion into Ceuta on 30 July have started to leave their mark on hotel bookings, with initial market data pointing to a concentration of cancellations for immediate stays. According to figures from the Travelgate platform, 84.13 per cent of cancellations made by Spanish clients in the seven days leading up to 4 September corresponded to stays planned for September. In other international markets, that same month accounted for only 51.58 per cent of cancellations, a difference of nearly 33 percentage points indicating that Spanish travellers are primarily withdrawing from imminent trips rather than those further in the future.

The data does not mean that 84 per cent of all Spanish bookings to Morocco have been cancelled, but rather that of the cancellations recorded during that specific week, the vast majority were for September. During the same period, September also represented 60 per cent of recent bookings from the Spanish market, compared to 44 per cent from other nationalities. The cancellations have affected destinations popular among Spanish tourists in the neighbouring country, including Marrakech, Agadir, Meknes and Tangier.

The tourism sector does not speak with a single voice. The Spanish Confederation of Travel Agencies acknowledged a clear slowdown in new bookings from the domestic market on 4 September but stated that it had not yet detected a significant volume of cancellations for already-programmed trips. Morocco, the organisation’s president José Manuel Lastra recalled, receives nearly four million Spanish visitors each year, and Ibero-American markets operating through Spanish agencies continued to book normally.

Other industry sources paint a starker picture, with executives describing sales as paralysed and, in some cases, zero sales, alongside a wave of cancellations since late July driven by fear that tensions with Rabat could worsen. The origin of the change in sentiment lies in the events of 30 and 31 July in Ceuta, when approximately 72,000 people crossed illegally into the autonomous city. The National High Court has opened an investigation, and a police report points to facilitation from the Moroccan side, an assertion that the government has variously qualified or denied at different times.
Morocco Claims It Warned Spain of Migration Crisis
While Spanish outbound flows cool, Morocco has continued to present rising overall figures for August. The impact, for now, is not a general collapse of the destination but a selective punishment from the closest and most sensitive market. Autumn is typically a strong season for Morocco, and if new bookings do not recover and last-minute cancellations persist, the effect on hotels, tour operators and connections with Spain will cease to be a weekly indicator and will become visible in the actual occupancy figures for the month.
