MADRID, Spain – The PSOE has launched a signature collection campaign to exert pressure on the Supreme Court with the aim of having it revoke the suspension of the voting rights of those naturalised through the so-called Grandchildren’s Law. The Socialists have sent an email to their membership warning of the real threat to democracy that would be posed by citizens who acquired or recovered Spanish nationality thanks to this rule losing their voice at the ballot box.
Supreme Court Suspends Voting Rights For Those Registered Under ‘grandchildren’s Law’
The party warns in the message that the Supreme Court is evaluating the case at this precise moment and that the final resolution is imminent, adding that if thousands of people unite and raise their voices today, they will exert the necessary pressure to achieve the immediate restitution of this fundamental right before it is too late. The PSOE maintains to its base that the manoeuvres of the far right and the right, which it labels as heirs of Francoism, have led the High Court to freeze the voting rights of Spanish citizens who acquired or recovered their nationality, warning of the imminent risk of them being stripped of their representation. In the view of the socialist leadership, the purpose of the PP and Vox is to turn this group into second-class citizens in order to obtain political gain by depriving them of the constitutional right to vote.

For this reason, from the party headquarters they are asking members to sign in order to defend the right to vote of all Spaniards, criticising that the formations led by Alberto Núñez Feijóo and Santiago Abascal cast doubt on whether these citizens can participate on equal terms in the democratic life of their country. The socialist initiative comes after the Supreme Court ordered the precautionary suspension of the inclusion in the Electoral Census of Absent Residents of people who obtained nationality through the additional provision of the Democratic Memory Law, approved in 2022.

The High Court found a founded and real danger to the validity of the results of future electoral processes. Its decision is based on the challenge to an instruction from the Ministry of Justice that removed the requirement to documentarily prove persecution for political or ideological reasons for those who left Spain between 1936 and 1955.
