LANZAROTE, Spain – The Spanish government’s official communications office, Moncloa, has distributed images of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez during a virtual meeting on the Ceuta crisis, in which he appears to have no legs, sparking widespread speculation over whether the photograph was digitally altered.
Ceuta on Alert as Social Media Urges New Migrant Wave
The photograph, taken at La Mareta, the National Heritage residence in Lanzarote, shows Sánchez seated at a glass table wearing a pink shirt, with papers on the desk and a screen displaying a videoconference with several ministers. What drew attention was not the meeting itself, but what was beneath the table: Sánchez’s legs are not visible, giving the impression that the image may have been edited.
The image circulated on social media for hours, becoming one of the most commented topics on X. Alongside the usual memes, numerous users shared enlarged versions of the photograph in an attempt to determine whether the oddity was due to graphic manipulation, the president’s position, the reflection of the table, or the chosen framing. Some also noted other potential signs of alteration, such as the wheel of the chair from which Sánchez followed the meeting with his ministers. In addition, a user posted a video on the X platform showing Pedro Sánchez using an optical mouse on a glass table, commenting that he is the only person in the world capable of doing so.

The image, however, does not provide conclusive proof of retouching, even though the absence of the president’s legs is not the only apparent sign of alteration. Sánchez is seated sideways, with his torso leaning towards the table and partially obscured by the glass, the metallic structure of the desk, and the chair’s seat. This combination of perspective, furniture, and reflections could explain why the lower part of his body is hidden or appears confusing in the photograph.
The other possibility raised on social media is that the image was modified before distribution. Those supporting this hypothesis point to the appearance of certain elements under the table, particularly the area around the chair and the shadows visible on the floor. For now, however, these remain visual interpretations of a still image rather than conclusive evidence of editing.

The scene has drawn comparisons to a similar image distributed in August 2021, also from La Mareta, during a meeting on the evacuation of Afghanistan. On that occasion, the president appeared dressed in a suit on his upper half, but beneath the table, he was wearing espadrilles. That photograph also sparked numerous comments and memes on social media due to the contrast between the solemnity of the meeting and his summer footwear.
This Friday’s meeting took place amidst the Ceuta crisis, following the mass influx of migrants from Morocco. The videoconference included, among other government members, Defence Minister Margarita Robles, Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska, Inclusion, Social Security and Migration Minister Elma Saiz, Youth and Childhood Minister Sira Rego, and Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory Minister Ángel Víctor Torres.

The government distributed the image as part of the president’s official activities during his holiday in Lanzarote. The photograph, however, ultimately became a significant focus of public conversation on Friday, centered on Moncloa’s staging and a question that, for now, remains unanswered: whether Sánchez’s legs have vanished due to an optical effect or, as the image’s inconsistencies appear to indicate, due to subsequent photographic editing.
