CEUTA, Spain – The regional government of Ceuta has expressed deep concern over emerging social media campaigns urging a new mass migration breach at the border on August 15. Alejandro Ramírez, the spokesperson for the Ceuta government, acknowledged the alarming spread of these online rumors and confirmed that the relevant security authorities have been notified to preempt any potential coordinated crossing attempts and ensure they are prepared for a situation similar to recent border crises.
Ceuta Crisis: Security Press Chief Dismissed Over Early Warning
In recent days, platforms such as TikTok and WhatsApp have seen a surge in posts inviting individuals to join specialized messaging groups aimed at organizing a collective border breach. These invitations, primarily circulated among networks of prospective irregular migrants, designate the Moroccan border town of Castillejos, known locally as Fnideq, as the primary gathering point. One prominent messaging channel, utilizing a term commonly used in North Africa to describe those who cross borders irregularly, explicitly targets the August 15 date while using urgent rhetoric such as “our last chance” to mobilize participants.

The current digital mobilization closely mirrors events from the summer of 2024, when similar online campaigns in Moroccan Arabic incited a collective crossing scheduled for mid-September of that year. During the preceding month, the enclave had recorded days with over 700 irregular entries via the perimeter fence and surrounding waters. However, the specific September 2024 mass attempt was successfully thwarted after Spanish and Moroccan forces coordinated a massive security deployment that prevented hundreds of gathered individuals from breaching the border, averting a crisis similar to the one experienced recently.
Police Unions Reject Claims of Normalcy in Ceuta Amid Migration Crisis
In response to the renewed threat and the ongoing aftermath of recent border crises, the Ceuta executive is focusing on three strategic objectives to restore stability. Local authorities are urgently demanding that the national government deploy additional resources and national police officers to guarantee security across the city’s neighborhoods. Furthermore, the regional administration is calling for a comprehensive national and international media strategy to accurately convey the ongoing realities of the enclave, while simultaneously pressing European institutions for a decisive response to safeguard what remain the European Union’s only terrestrial borders on the African continent.
