MADRID, Spain – The Spanish government has abruptly dismissed the civil servant responsible for disseminating information alerts for the National Security Department of the Prime Minister’s Office. The termination, which took effect on August 1, follows her decision to publish an internal report detailing the massive and unprecedented influx of migrants into the North African enclave of Ceuta.

Following the border breach that began on July 30, the official published an analysis and distributed a communication on July 31 estimating that 49,000 individuals had entered the city. The release of these figures reportedly caused significant friction within Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s administration, which deemed the publication premature. Consequently, the head of the National Security Department, General Loreto Hurtado, terminated the press chief citing a “loss of confidence,” though the decision does not strip her of her underlying civil servant status. The official was notified of her dismissal via telephone while on vacation and was only permitted to return to her office briefly to collect her personal belongings. The controversial report has since been scrubbed from the department’s website, which has not published a press release since July 27.

While government sources initially dismissed the 49,000 figure as unofficial, the Ministry of the Interior later that same day released a nearly identical estimate of 50,000 crossings, a number that has since continued to rise. The administration maintains that no intelligence reports had anticipated a crisis of this magnitude. However, media reports citing state security sources indicate that the National Intelligence Center had issued multiple warnings to the Interior Ministry weeks in advance. These intelligence assessments reportedly identified an early July Supreme Court ruling restricting immediate border pushbacks as a critical turning point that generated a powerful pull factor, ultimately facilitating the mass migration event.

In response to the border breach, the National Court has launched a formal investigation to determine whether the mass entry was a coordinated effort orchestrated by a criminal organization. Judge María Tardón has directed the Unit against Immigration Networks and Document Forgery to compile a comprehensive report on the irregular crossings and the potential involvement of illicit networks, while also forwarding the proceedings to the Public Prosecutor’s Office for further review.
