CEUTA, Spain – The Spanish Civil Guard is closely monitoring social media activity indicating plans for a new mass crossing into Ceuta on August 15, describing the threat as “more than a rumour” following last week’s unprecedented influx of 72,000 migrants.

Messages circulating on WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook groups with up to 400,000 members are calling for a gathering in the Moroccan border town of Castillejos . The posts, which include the date “15/08/2026” and slogans such as “Our last opportunity,” are being shared through a group identified as “Haraga mrc,” referencing the North African term for those attempting irregular crossings.
While the Guardia Civil acknowledges the genuine risk, security sources emphasise that any new attempt is unlikely to match the scale of the previous incident . Enhanced surveillance, real coordination with Moroccan authorities, and a significant security presence on both sides of the border have been implemented since July, with the strengthened measures already proving effective in deterring a similar mass mobilisation on September 15, 2024.

Interior Ministry sources have stated that authorities are prepared to respond to any new incident, although some Guardia Civil sectors remain critical of the government’s handling of the crisis. They attribute any potential success in preventing another breach to anticipation and coordination, rather than the recently installed floating barrier.
Beyond immediate security measures, the Civil Guard has called for long-term reinforcements, including at least 200 additional officers, the expansion of the Tarajal and Benzú breakwaters, clear operational protocols, and effective European Union involvement, emphasising that Ceuta is not merely Spain’s border, but the EU’s southern frontier.

Ceuta’s president, Juan José Vivas, has acknowledged ongoing public unease, as the city is far from returning to normalcy and residents view the August 15 date with apprehension . The Government’s delegate in Ceuta, Miguel Ángel Pérez Triano, confirmed that more than 100 Civil Guard officers, along with National Police and military personnel, will remain deployed in the autonomous city indefinitely, with the army’s presence deemed a deterrent against potential assaults.
