BARCELONA, Spain — Four individuals have been arrested in a coordinated law enforcement operation aimed at combating the sale of narcotics to foreign tourists in the iconic Las Ramblas area of Barcelona. The joint operation, conducted by the Guardia Urbana and the Mossos d’Esquadra on June 4, culminated in the seizure of cocaine, heroin, ecstasy, and marijuana from an apartment in the Sants-Montjuïc district.

The investigation was launched following reports from the Ciutat Vella and Sants-Montjuïc police districts, which had identified a pattern of individuals actively selling illicit substances to foreigners in the vicinity of Las Ramblas. The practice has become a common nuisance in the lower section of the famous pedestrian boulevard, where drug dealers frequently approach tourists directly, openly advertising the substances they have available for sale.
In response to these complaints, a joint investigative team was established to address the growing problem. Through systematic surveillance and tracking operations, officers were able to confirm the extent of the drug-selling activity and successfully identify an apartment being used as a storage and distribution point. The location served as a base of operations for the narcotics network targeting the steady flow of international visitors in the area.
During the raid on the apartment, law enforcement agents seized significant quantities of cocaine, heroin, ecstasy, and marijuana. In addition to the illicit substances, officers confiscated 875 euros in cash and various materials used for packaging and preparing the drugs for street-level distribution. The operation was supported by the police canine unit, which assisted in locating the concealed narcotics.

The arrests mark a significant effort by Barcelona’s law enforcement agencies to combat the persistent issue of drug dealing in one of the city’s most visited tourist destinations. Las Ramblas, a tree-lined pedestrian mall that stretches through the heart of Barcelona’s historic Ciutat Vella district, attracts millions of visitors annually and has long been plagued by various forms of street crime, including pickpocketing and drug sales.
The joint operation underscores the ongoing collaboration between the local Guardia Urbana and the regional Mossos d’Esquadra in addressing public safety concerns in areas with high tourist traffic. Authorities have increasingly focused on disrupting the networks that supply street-level dealers, aiming to reduce both the visibility of drug transactions and the associated criminal activity that affects residents and visitors alike.
