Man Seriously Injured After Being Shot in Broad Daylight in Barcelona
Matías de Paula, the artistic name of 52-year-old Matías Corraliza Fernández, was killed after being shot multiple times in Plaza Rafael Alberti in Villanueva de la Serena, Badajoz, shortly after 3:00 p.m. Emergency responders from the Don Benito-Villanueva de la Serena Judicial Police, the Extremadura Health Service, and local municipal police rushed to the scene, but were unable to save his life despite immediate medical intervention.
According to preliminary information from Spain’s National Police, the suspected gunman has been identified but has not yet been apprehended. Following the shooting, the suspect fled the scene in a waiting vehicle occupied by two other individuals. The National Police has assumed lead responsibility for the investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the killing and to locate those involved.
“The flamenco community is in mourning,” said a representative from a local cultural association who requested anonymity. “Matías was not just a talented artist; he was a mentor, a friend, and a pillar of our cultural life. This loss is devastating.”
While authorities have not officially confirmed a motive, local media outlet Hoy reported that investigators are exploring a possible romantic dispute as a potential factor, suggesting that the deceased and the suspect may have had conflicts related to the suspect’s former spouse. Sources also indicated that the suspected gunman had recently been released from prison, though these details remain unconfirmed by official channels.
De Paula was a prominent figure in Extremadura’s flamenco scene, with a career spanning more than two decades. Born into a family deeply connected to flamenco, he was the son of the celebrated singer Diego Corraliza, known professionally as “Diego El Chucarro,” from whom he inherited his passion for the art form. He spent over 20 years developing his craft in Madrid, performing at prestigious flamenco venues and sharing stages with notable artists including the singer Pitingo, establishing himself as a respected voice within the national flamenco circuit.
In later years, De Paula returned to Villanueva de la Serena, the town where he was born and raised, to continue promoting flamenco culture. He founded the flamenco club “Peña Flamenca Diego El Chucarro,” named in honor of his father, where he actively participated in cultural programming, taught classes, and mentored emerging artists and enthusiasts. “He was dedicated to keeping flamenco alive for future generations,” said a colleague from the local arts community. “His commitment to teaching and sharing this tradition was unparalleled.”
The killing has prompted an outpouring of grief from artists, cultural institutions, and residents across Extremadura and beyond. Social media has been filled with tributes to De Paula’s artistry, his generosity as a teacher, and his warmth as a person. Flamenco associations have announced moments of silence and commemorative performances to honor his legacy.

The National Police has indicated that forensic analysis, witness interviews, and digital evidence review are all underway as part of the inquiry.
For the family of Matías de Paula, the sudden and violent loss has been profoundly traumatic. Victim support services have been activated to provide counseling, logistical assistance, and liaison support during this difficult period. Privacy protocols are being observed to protect the dignity of the deceased and his loved ones.
The incident has also reignited broader conversations about public safety, conflict resolution, and the protection of cultural figures who contribute significantly to community life. Local officials in Villanueva de la Serena have expressed commitment to supporting both the investigation and the healing process for residents affected by the tragedy.
“Our town is grieving, but we remain united,” said a municipal representative. “We stand with Matías’s family, his students, and all who loved his art. We trust in our law enforcement agencies to pursue justice with diligence and care.”
As the investigation continues, authorities have appealed to anyone who witnessed the shooting or who may have information about the suspect’s whereabouts or the vehicle used in the escape to come forward through official channels. Even seemingly minor details—such as descriptions of the vehicle, directions of travel, or interactions observed prior to the incident—could prove valuable in advancing the inquiry.
Further updates regarding arrests, judicial proceedings, and commemorative events honoring Matías de Paula’s legacy are expected as Spanish authorities and cultural organizations provide additional information through official channels.
