MADRID, Spain — Live broadcasting on Spain’s public television network TVE was interrupted for approximately 20 minutes on Friday morning due to an electrical failure, affecting both the flagship TVE-1 channel and the 24-hour news channel Canal 24h, according to official statements from the broadcaster.

The disruption began at 8:09 a.m. during the live broadcast of “La Hora de la 1,” a morning news program hosted by Silvia Intxaurrondo. Viewers tuning to either TVE-1 or Canal 24h were met with placeholder screens displaying the respective channel logos alongside promotional advertisements, with no immediate explanation provided for the interruption.
Broadcasting resumed at 8:28 a.m., when Intxaurrondo returned to air to address the situation. “We have experienced a power outage of a nature we do not yet fully understand, which caused our broadcast to be interrupted,” the presenter explained upon returning to the screen. “You cannot imagine the coordination efforts that took place in the production control rooms and across all the buildings at Prado del Rey,” she added, referring to RTVE’s headquarters complex in Madrid. “Thank you, colleagues, for enabling us to restore broadcasting,” Intxaurrondo said, celebrating that the signal had been recovered “in record time.”
According to sources from RTVE who spoke to the newspaper 20 Minutos, the outage was caused by the failure of a magnetothermal circuit breaker—a type of electrical safety switch—that had already experienced problems on Thursday and malfunctioned again on Friday morning. The technical fault affected power distribution to critical broadcasting infrastructure, prompting an emergency response from engineering and technical teams.
The incident highlights the complex technical infrastructure required to maintain continuous live television broadcasting. Modern television centers rely on redundant power systems, backup generators, and uninterruptible power supplies to minimize the risk of on-air disruptions. Despite these safeguards, occasional technical failures can still occur, particularly when equipment experiences repeated stress or when unforeseen complications arise.
“For viewers, a brief interruption may seem minor, but behind the scenes, restoring a live broadcast involves coordinated efforts across multiple departments,” said a Madrid-based broadcast engineering specialist who requested anonymity. “The fact that TVE was able to return to air within 20 minutes reflects the preparedness of their technical teams.”
RTVE has not indicated whether the electrical failure affected other operations at the Prado del Rey complex, which houses studios, newsrooms, administrative offices, and technical facilities for Spain’s public broadcaster. The organization has emphasized that routine maintenance and equipment upgrades are ongoing priorities to ensure reliable service.

For the production team of “La Hora de la 1,” the unexpected interruption required quick thinking and adaptability. Morning news programs operate on tight schedules, with segments planned down to the minute. When technical issues arise, presenters and producers must adjust content, manage viewer expectations, and ensure that critical news coverage continues once broadcasting resumes.
“We understand that viewers rely on us for timely information,” Intxaurrondo stated during the resumed broadcast. “We apologize for any inconvenience this interruption may have caused and appreciate your patience.”
The incident also drew attention on social media, where viewers expressed curiosity about the cause of the disruption and praised the professionalism of the on-air team in handling the situation. Some users shared screenshots of the placeholder screens, while others commended the swift return to normal programming.
Spain’s public broadcaster has faced various technical and financial challenges in recent years, including budget constraints, staffing adjustments, and infrastructure modernization efforts. Despite these pressures, RTVE continues to operate multiple television and radio channels serving millions of viewers and listeners across the country and internationally.
As part of its commitment to transparency, RTVE has indicated that it will conduct a thorough review of the electrical failure to identify root causes and implement measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. Technical teams are expected to assess the performance of backup systems and evaluate whether additional redundancies or equipment upgrades are warranted.
For now, regular programming has resumed across TVE’s channels, and the broadcaster has returned to its standard schedule. Further updates regarding the technical investigation and any preventive measures are expected as RTVE provides additional information through official channels.
