The incident occurred around 3:00 a.m. near the city’s new bus and commuter rail station, adjacent to Plaza de Berenguer IV. According to police reports, the victim was walking home after attending the traditional snail-eating festival when she was intercepted by two individuals described as men of Maghrebi origin. The woman subsequently filed a formal complaint with the Mossos d’Esquadra, Catalonia’s regional police force.
Emergency protocols for sexual violence cases were immediately activated upon receipt of the complaint. Investigators are working to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, identify the alleged perpetrators, and gather all available evidence. As of the time of publication, no arrests have been made in connection with the case.
Authorities indicated that the victim experienced significant distress following the incident and had difficulty recalling certain details of the events. Police emphasized that such responses are common among survivors of traumatic experiences and that investigative procedures are designed to accommodate the needs of victims while pursuing thorough examination of all available information.
The Aplec del Caragol, one of Lleida’s most prominent cultural celebrations, attracts thousands of visitors annually for traditional cuisine, music, and community gatherings. Local authorities typically maintain enhanced security presence during major festivals to ensure public safety, though incidents of this nature underscore ongoing challenges in protecting individuals, particularly during nighttime hours when crowds disperse.
Under Spanish criminal law, sexual assault constitutes a serious offense carrying significant penalties upon conviction. Prosecutors will evaluate all available evidence, including witness statements, forensic documentation, digital records, and victim testimony, to determine appropriate charges and procedural next steps. All individuals mentioned in connection with potential criminal activity are presumed innocent until proven guilty through formal judicial proceedings.

This incident follows other recent reports of sexual violence in Catalonia, including a separate case in Rubí earlier this week in which a minor was detained following allegations of assaulting two young women. That operation involved coordinated efforts among multiple police units, including aerial support, to locate and apprehend the suspect.
