The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. on Friday, May 22, at a gas station on Avinguda de Conflent. According to police reports, four individuals were detected engaging in suspicious activity consistent with cargo theft, a criminal specialty involving the theft of goods from trucks parked at highway service areas, particularly along the AP-7 motorway, or in industrial zones.
When officers from the Mossos d’Esquadra and the Badalona Municipal Guard attempted to intervene, three of the suspects fled in a stolen BMW vehicle, accelerating onto the B-20 highway at high speed. A fourth individual attempted to escape on foot upon noticing the police presence but was intercepted and detained by municipal officers.
As his accomplices entered the stolen BMW, they reportedly accelerated directly toward the unmarked police vehicles with apparent intent to collide with them. Faced with an immediate threat to their physical safety and observing that the driver showed no intention of stopping, officers discharged their weapons at the vehicle. The BMW subsequently struck one of the police cars before continuing its flight from the scene.
Authorities have not confirmed whether any injuries resulted from the incident. However, given that video footage reportedly shows an officer firing toward the vehicle’s interior prior to its departure, investigators are examining the possibility that the driver may have sustained injuries during the confrontation.
The term “teloneros” refers to criminal groups specializing in stealing cargo from stationary trucks, often operating along major transportation corridors. These networks typically employ coordinated tactics to identify vulnerable vehicles, bypass security measures, and rapidly transport stolen goods to distribution channels. Law enforcement agencies across Catalonia have prioritized disrupting such operations due to their economic impact and potential for escalation into violent confrontations.

Under Spanish criminal law, offenses including robbery, vehicle theft, assault on law enforcement officers, and reckless endangerment carry significant penalties upon conviction. Prosecutors will evaluate all available evidence, including video documentation, witness statements, forensic analysis of the vehicles involved, and digital records, to determine appropriate charges and procedural next steps.
The Mossos d’Esquadra have emphasized that officers are trained to use proportional force when confronted with imminent threats to life or serious bodily harm. Protocols governing the use of firearms require that such measures be employed only when strictly necessary and when no less harmful alternatives are available to neutralize the threat.
Badalona, a municipality adjacent to Barcelona, has experienced increased law enforcement attention regarding organized criminal activity, including cargo theft, vehicle theft rings, and related offenses. Local authorities maintain coordinated operations involving municipal police, regional forces, and specialized units to address these challenges while ensuring public safety.
For residents and businesses in industrial and transportation zones, authorities recommend implementing robust security measures for parked vehicles, including GPS tracking systems, secure parking facilities, and prompt reporting of suspicious activity. Collaboration between private sector operators and law enforcement remains central to preventing cargo theft and disrupting criminal networks.
As the investigation continues, authorities have appealed to anyone who may have witnessed the incident on the B-20 highway or who possesses relevant information, including dashcam footage, to come forward through official channels. Further updates regarding the search for the fleeing suspects, judicial proceedings, or related enforcement actions are expected as the Mossos d’Esquadra and relevant agencies provide additional information through verified sources.
