According to sources, when another woman attempted to help the victim, the attacker directed himself toward a group of Latinos who were drinking in the area and instigated a fight with them, during which he was injured in an arm. Upon the arrival of officers, the man struck one of them in the face without warning, causing a fracture to the jaw, with the injured officer requiring medical attention and being transferred to the University Hospital of Navarra. At the time of his arrest, the Nigerian man was carrying a bladed weapon.

The SIPNA union later published a message of support for the injured officer through its social media account, expressing hope that the officer would recover from the serious injuries sustained. The union also used the message to comment on the situations officers face during certain interventions, stating that officers are confronted with increasingly dangerous individuals as a consequence of a permissive policy that protects the wrongdoer. The case has drawn attention to the risks faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty and the challenges of policing in urban areas.
