SITGES, Spain – The Sitges City Council has condemned the disturbances that occurred during the early hours of Monday, which forced the postponement of the Sant Bartomeu Matinal, one of the most emblematic events of the town’s major festival. In a statement, the council firmly rejected and condemned the violent attitudes that took place after the Festa Major concert on Passeig de la Ribera, which caused serious public order problems and damage to public thoroughfares.

Sources from the Mossos d’Esquadra explained that the incidents occurred around 4:30 a.m. after the closure of nightlife venues, when a large number of people gathered in the street. In this context, groups composed of Moroccans and locals began fighting among themselves, forcing Security officers to intervene to separate and disperse them. The large number of people present and the attitude of some young people who resisted leaving required the activation of the Regional Operational Resources Areas and the Mobile Brigade of the Mossos, with the Local Police also participating, though no injuries or arrests were reported.
The Matinal eventually began at 7:15 a.m. on Monday with an adapted route departing from the City Hall and passing through Baluard, Fonollar, Baluard Vidal Quadras, Port de n’Alegre, Rafel Llopart, Sant Damià, Sant Sebastià, Jesús, Cap de la Vila, and Major before returning to the Town Hall square. The City Council made it clear that the incidents and violent behaviour would not stop the Festa Major celebrations, expressing gratitude for the understanding, patience, and good attitude of the participating groups.

The council also expressed its support for the security forces that intervened to contain those involved, as well as the health services and cleaning teams that worked to ensure care for people and the recovery of public space. The festival continued despite the disturbances, though the incidents have raised concerns about public safety during large-scale events in the popular Catalan coastal town.
