MADRID, Spain — Massive forest fires ravaging the regions of Madrid and Ávila have forced the evacuation and confinement of tens of thousands of residents, with authorities warning that the separate blazes are dangerously close to merging into a single, catastrophic front. The escalating crisis has prompted the central government to declare a national interest emergency, assuming direct coordination of the response efforts.

The situation has reached a critical juncture as the fire in Burgohondo, Ávila, has already consumed nearly 9,000 hectares and forced the evacuation of approximately 1,600 people, including recent additions from the nearby town of Cebreros. Simultaneously, in the Community of Madrid, two major fires originating in Almorox and San Martín de Valdeiglesias have converged near Villa del Prado. This merged front has scorched an estimated 6,000 hectares, leading to the confinement or evacuation of roughly 19,000 individuals. Firefighters report that the blaze is advancing at a rate of five to six kilometers per hour, and meteorological forecasts warn of impending wind gusts reaching up to 60 kilometers per hour, which could further accelerate the fire’s spread.
In response to the severe deterioration of the situation, Spain’s Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, officially declared a national interest emergency for both Madrid and Ávila. This designation transfers the direction and coordination of the emergency response to the central government. Madrid’s President, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, has characterized the event as the most severe forest fire in the history of the region, underscoring the unprecedented scale of the disaster.
New evacuation orders have been issued as the fire continues to advance. Residents of Fresnedillas de la Oliva have been ordered to evacuate toward Valdemorillo, with temporary shelter arrangements established in Brunete, Villanueva de la Cañada, Villaviciosa, and Las Rozas. Similarly, the population of Robledo de Chavela has been directed to evacuate toward El Escorial, with hosting facilities prepared in Las Rozas. Additionally, a confinement order has been enacted for the municipality of Navalagamella due to the fire’s proximity. Preliminary assessments in the El Encinar del Alberche urbanization in Villa del Prado indicate devastating property damage, with 43 homes completely destroyed and another 286 sustaining varying degrees of damage.
A massive multi-agency operational device, involving firefighters, the Civil Guard, local police, and forest agents, has been deployed to evaluate the situation and combat the flames. Amid the chaos, a significant secondary concern has emerged among the displaced population regarding the welfare of pets and livestock left behind in the evacuated zones. Local authorities and relief organizations report that the safety of animals has become a primary focus for evacuees, overshadowing immediate concerns about property loss as residents await news about their homes.

In a separate incident, a forest fire that broke out on Friday in the municipality of Galar reached the perimeter of the Noáin-Pamplona airport. Although the blaze approached the facility, it did not impact flight operations, as no flights were scheduled during that timeframe. Civil Guard units, alongside SEPRONA environmental agents and municipal police, were deployed to coordinate the response and regulate access to the area.
As the investigation into the causes of the blazes continues, the Civil Guard has detained one individual and is actively investigating another in connection with the Burgohondo fire in Ávila. Authorities have identified the origin of that specific blaze as gross negligence resulting from the illegal use of heavy machinery in an area where such activity is strictly prohibited.
Emergency services remain on maximum alert as they battle the extreme weather conditions and work to establish definitive firebreaks.
