MADRID, Spain — High-speed rail service between Madrid and Barcelona was suspended for over an hour on Thursday following a fire that broke out in close proximity to the railway infrastructure in the Community of Madrid. The incident prompted immediate safety protocols, temporarily halting traffic along one of Spain’s busiest transit corridors before authorities could safely restore operations.

The disruption primarily affected the rail segment between Mejorada del Campo and Alcalá de Henares. According to statements from the state-owned railway infrastructure manager, Adif, and the national rail operator, Renfe, the blaze was external to railway operations but posed a significant enough threat to nearby tracks to warrant an immediate suspension of train traffic. Emergency services responded swiftly, and the fire was fully extinguished by approximately 4:00 p.m. Following a thorough safety inspection of the tracks and surrounding infrastructure, Adif confirmed that train circulation began to normalize gradually.
In response to the disruption, Renfe proactively contacted affected passengers via SMS and email to inform them of the delays. The operator announced that travelers holding tickets for the impacted services would be eligible for free changes or full cancellations. The affected routes included the primary AVE high-speed services connecting Madrid and Barcelona, which make scheduled stops in Guadalajara, Calatayud, Zaragoza, Lleida, and Camp de Tarragona. Additionally, the proximity of the fire near San Fernando de Henares forced the temporary diversion of Cercanías commuter trains traveling between Guadalajara and Chamartín, which were rerouted to terminate at Madrid’s Atocha station until the area was declared safe.

The incident underscores a growing seasonal challenge for Spain’s transportation network. Last week, Spain’s Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, acknowledged that summer rail disruptions caused by wildfires have become an unfortunate but expected reality. He noted that the frequency of fires across Spain has increased by 80 percent in recent years, creating a volatile climate environment that directly impacts sensitive infrastructure.
Minister Puente emphasized that the railway system is increasingly vulnerable to climate-related aggression. He clarified that while speed restrictions are currently in place at various points along the network, these measures are not merely reactive to isolated summer events. Rather, they are the result of stringent, pre-established safety protocols and legislative mandates enforced by Adif to ensure the highest levels of passenger and operational security during high-risk periods.

As the summer season progresses, railway authorities continue to monitor weather conditions and maintain heightened vigilance along the network.
