Six Arrested In Sweeping Corruption Raid At PSOE-led Soria City Council
SORIA, Spain — The Guardia Civil has arrested six individuals and executed searches at the Soria City Council, which is governed by the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE), as well as at two private residences linked to an ongoing corruption investigation.

According to the Government Sub-delegation in Soria, four of the arrests took place within the province, while the other two occurred in the Community of Madrid. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of additional detentions as the operation continues to unfold throughout the day. The sweeping judicial probe is investigating a complex web of alleged offenses, including influence peddling, administrative prevarication, prohibited negotiations and activities for public officials, document forgery, money laundering, and criminal organization, all of which carry severe penalties under the Spanish Penal Code.
The early morning raids at the municipal headquarters were carried out by the Judicial Police of the Guardia Civil under the direction of the Provincial Court Public Prosecutor’s Office and the authorization of the Court of First Instance Number 3 of Soria. The judicial mandate permitted various investigative actions, including property searches and arrests, though the proceedings are currently protected by strict judicial secrecy. The searches at the city hall are reportedly focused on the municipality’s Commerce department.
The municipal government is currently led by Socialist Mayor Javier Antón, who took over from Carlos Martínez. Martínez, who served as mayor for 19 years, stepped down last April to assume his seat as a lawmaker in the regional parliament, where he also serves as the secretary-general of the PSOE in Castilla y León. In response to the raids, the City Council issued an official statement affirming its maximum collaboration with the judicial authorities and the agents executing the warrants. The municipal government emphasized that it is providing all requested documentation and information to the investigators.

However, citing the ongoing judicial secrecy and the preliminary nature of the investigation, the council noted it lacks sufficient information regarding the full scope and content of the proceedings. The administration urged prudence, responsibility, and respect for the judicial process, calling on the public and media to avoid speculation or premature conclusions until the specific facts under investigation are officially clarified, while reiterating its commitment to transparency and legality.
Meanwhile, the political fallout has already begun, with the parliamentary group of the conservative Popular Party (PP) in the Cortes of Castilla y León demanding immediate explanations from Carlos Martínez. The opposition has expressed its utmost concern regarding the raids and is pressing the Socialist leader for clarity on the situation as the investigation progresses.
As the investigation continues, authorities are working to uncover the full extent of the alleged corruption network within the municipal administration.
