ERC Leader Oriol Junqueras Urges Junts Not To Pave The Way For Right-wing Return To Power
MADRID, Spain — Oriol Junqueras, the leader of the Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC), has publicly urged the Junts party not to facilitate the return of right-wing politics to the Spanish central government, warning against parliamentary maneuvers that could inadvertently bring the conservative Popular Party (PP) and the far-right Vox back to power.

The political appeal comes in response to a recent legislative maneuver by Junts. Earlier on Tuesday, Junts lawmakers submitted an amendment to a motion proposed by the PP, which sought to dissolve the General Courts and pressure Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez into calling for early general elections. However, the Bureau of the Congress of Deputies moved to reject the amendment, effectively halting the procedural effort.
Taking to social media to address the growing political friction between the two key Catalan parties, Junqueras acknowledged the fragility of the current socialist administration. He conceded that the PSOE-led government is undeniably weak, attributing a significant portion of that vulnerability to the PSOE itself. Nevertheless, he pivoted to emphasize ERC’s primary duty to the Catalan people, arguing that the current political landscape presents a crucial opportunity that must not be squandered by internal divisions.

Junqueras stressed that the strategic focus for Catalan political forces should remain on taking advantage of the current government to resolve pending legislative issues and advance key agendas for Catalonia. He warned that aligning with the conservative and far-right factions would be a severe strategic error, cautioning that if the PP and Vox were to return to La Moncloa, the central government would once again adopt policies that govern directly against the interests of Catalonia.
