Man Arrested in Cadaqués for Sexual Assault

In the early morning hours of Wednesday, May 13, a woman leaving an establishment in Cadaqués, in the Alt Empordà region, was violently assaulted from behind while walking alone on Sa Jorneta street. The attacker, a 43-year-old man whose nationality has not been disclosed, took advantage of her isolation to throw himself upon her and force sexual touching upon her body.

The victim fought back with determination and managed to push the man off her, breaking free from his grip. Rather than retreat or show any remorse, the individual then pulled his genitals from his trousers and began to masturbate openly in front of her, without any form of consent. Terrified, the woman fled the scene running and was able to seek help from others nearby.

The victim later filed a formal complaint with the Mossos d’Esquadra, the Catalan police force. Two days after the attack, on May 15, officers successfully located and arrested the man, of African origin, in Cadaqués. He was already a familiar face to the police, having accumulated more than fifteen prior criminal records, marking him as a multirecidivist offender.

He was taken into custody on charges of sexual assault without penetration. However, after being brought before the courts in Figueres, he was once again released pending trial, a scenario that has become increasingly common for a large portion of repeat offenders operating in Catalonia. As a result, despite his long history of aggression, the man was set free to potentially continue accumulating new offenses and preying on vulnerable individuals.
