CAMBRILS, Catalonia — A street vendor of sub-Saharan origin has been detained following a violent confrontation with local police in Cambrils, Baix Camp, during which one officer sustained injuries, according to municipal sources and verified local reports.
Man Arrested For Knife Assault In Central Girona
The incident occurred around 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 28, on Avinguda de la Diputació near Vilafortuny beach. A two-officer patrol from the Cambrils Local Police, conducting routine duties following an operation targeting illegal street vending, observed an individual at a bus stop carrying a bag containing suspected counterfeit merchandise.
When officers approached to request identification and initiate confiscation procedures for the allegedly illegal goods, the man reportedly refused to provide documentation and attempted to prevent officers from securing the bag. According to municipal officials, the situation escalated when the individual became aggressive toward the officers.
What began as a verbal dispute rapidly intensified as the man reportedly confronted the officers physically. Police deployed extendable batons in self-defense as the individual began striking at them. Witnesses described a chaotic scene in which the vendor forcefully pushed one officer before delivering multiple punches and striking with what appeared to be a belt.
After a brief struggle, the suspect fell to the ground and was subsequently subdued by officers. He was handcuffed and arrested on charges of assault against law enforcement personnel. A backup police unit arrived shortly thereafter to transport the detained individual to the local police station for processing.
One of the officers sustained multiple injuries during the confrontation, primarily punches to the head, and required medical evaluation at a nearby healthcare facility. The extent of the injuries has not been publicly disclosed, though authorities indicated the officer was treated and released.
The incident drew attention from nearby residents, some of whom observed the confrontation from their windows after hearing the disturbance. Local authorities have emphasized that police officers are trained to use proportional force when confronted with physical resistance while carrying out lawful duties.
