ESPLUGUES DE LLOBREGAT, Barcelona — Catalan police, regional government officials, and local authorities have formally dismissed terrorism as a motive in the fatal stabbing of a woman in the Finestrelles neighborhood of Esplugues de Llobregat last Saturday morning, instead pointing to a “suspected psychotic episode” as the “most probable explanation for the attack.”
The Moroccan Who Killed A Minor In Esplugues De Llobregat Shouted ‘Allahu Akbar’
The victim, a resident of the neighborhood and a Chinese national, was killed when a man of Maghrebi origin allegedly stabbed her repeatedly on a public street. According to witness accounts gathered by investigators, the suspect reportedly shouted “Allahu Akbar” (“Allah is great” in Arabic) during the assault, a detail that quickly fueled speculation on social media about a possible jihadist motivation. However, the Mossos d’Esquadra have conducted a thorough review of the detained individual’s background, including any potential history of radicalization toward extremist ideologies, and “have found no evidence to support that hypothesis”.
In statements to Catalunya Ràdio, Catalonia’s Interior Minister, Núria Parlon, emphasized that “a priori, this appears to be a person who was in an altered state and likely had some type of personal issue that has nothing to do with jihadism.” For this reason, she added, “it cannot be concluded in any way that this constitutes a terrorist attack.” The mayor of Esplugues, Eduard Sanz, echoed this assessment, underscoring that the investigation is proceeding on the basis of mental health concerns rather than ideological violence.
According to investigative sources, who spoke under conditions of judicial secrecy, authorities believe the suspect may have selected his victim at random. The man, who remains in police custody, exhibited extreme agitation and violence when officers apprehended him at the scene. He was subsequently transferred to a medical facility, where he was administered a sedative to stabilize his condition. He is now awaiting examination by a forensic psychiatrist, whose evaluation will be critical in determining his mental state and fitness to face judicial proceedings.
Neighbors in the Finestrelles area described the suspect as having behaved erratically in the days leading up to the attack, with several reporting confrontational or unsettling interactions. Police are now investigating how long the individual has been residing in Spain, whether he has a registered address, and what factors may have contributed to his apparent psychological deterioration.
The attack also left a second person injured, a man who attempted to intervene as the assault unfolded. He sustained minor wounds and was treated at the scene before being released. Emergency services, including medical teams from the Emergency Medical System (SEM) and multiple Mossos d’Esquadra units, responded rapidly to the incident, but the primary victim could not be saved.
In the hours following the crime, as images of the suspect wielding a knife circulated online, social media platforms saw a surge of posts linking the attack to terrorism, largely based on the unverified claim that the assailant had shouted religious phrases during the assault. Catalan authorities have explicitly cautioned against drawing premature conclusions, urging the public to await the results of the formal investigation before attributing motive.
“The investigation is ongoing and remains under judicial secrecy,” a Mossos d’Esquadra spokesperson stated. “We ask for prudence and responsibility in sharing information, out of respect for the victim, her family, and the integrity of the investigative process.”
The case has reignited broader conversations about mental health support, community integration, and public safety in urban environments. While the immediate focus remains on establishing the facts surrounding this specific incident, local officials have reiterated their commitment to providing psychological and social resources to residents who may be struggling.
As the judicial process advances, the forensic psychiatric evaluation of the detained suspect will play a decisive role in shaping the legal trajectory of the case. Spanish law provides specific procedures for individuals whose mental capacity at the time of an alleged offense is in question, potentially leading to measures focused on treatment rather than punitive sentencing.
For the community of Esplugues de Llobregat, the tragedy has prompted an outpouring of grief and calls for unity. A public tribute was held near the site of the attack, where residents gathered to honor the victim and express solidarity with her loved ones. Local authorities have also increased police presence in the area as a precautionary measure while the investigation continues.
