MADRID, Spain – The National Police has detained two minors, aged 17 and 16 of foreign origin and residents of Burgos, as alleged perpetrators of the death of an 83-year-old woman in her home on Calle Vitoria in Burgos. According to the autopsy, the victim died of respiratory failure after being gagged and immobilised, which prevented her from reaching the oxygen equipment she needed in her daily life.

The detainees were located during the night of Friday and gave statements in the early hours, according to the Government Subdelegation. Late on Saturday morning, once the police report was completed, they were placed at the disposal of the duty prosecutor’s office in Burgos, which must decide on their admission to a juvenile centre as a precautionary measure. Officers have also recovered several of the gold jewels stolen from inside the home. From the outset, the National Police investigated the woman’s death as a homicide and worked with robbery as the main hypothesis, without ruling out other motives. The full visual inspection inside the home revealed evident disorder and indicated that the perpetrator or perpetrators were looking for something of value, as they had focused on the rooms where money or jewels are usually kept. According to the autopsy, the body showed no other signs of violence.
The taking of statements also allowed the time of the events to be narrowed down with great precision: the robbery and the woman’s death occurred during that same afternoon. From there, Judicial Police officers carried out numerous investigative steps, including the viewing of cameras, the main evidence that has allowed them to reach the now-detained. The samples collected by the Scientific Police at the scene will be decisive, being analysed in the laboratory and cross-checked with those of the detainees. Investigations continue and further arrests are not ruled out, according to the same sources.
The events, which date back to Tuesday afternoon, took place at number 181 Calle Vitoria in the Gamonal neighbourhood. After the call received by the 112 emergency service shortly before seven, the first police units to arrive at the home confirmed that the victim was unconscious and tied up, with medical assistance only able to confirm her death. The interior of the house showed visible disorder, with certain rooms rummaged through, pointing to robbery. The woman lived alone, had reduced mobility and suffered from severe respiratory deficiency, for which she received home assistance.
Public Outcry In Spain Over Housing Unaccompanied Minors In Luxury Chalets
What was clear from the outset was the time of death, as it was the interval between her son leaving the home at four in the afternoon after eating with his mother and the call from the social worker who raised the alarm upon finding the body at a quarter to seven. The Government Subdelegate in Burgos, Pedro de la Fuente, already considered on the day of the event the hypothesis that “in that period of time someone entered, exercised violence against her, ransacked the house and in the end ended with this despicable crime.” From that moment, according to his account, Local and National Police officers, who arrived at practically the same time with a few seconds’ difference, took charge of the matter, with the National Police placing the scientific police and judicial police at the service of the procedure opened, an operation that has allowed the arrest of the two minors four days after the death of the woman they robbed.
