MADRID, Spain – The Interior Ministry has detected a jihadist call to carry out attacks against police officers and protesters in Spain and other European countries, taking advantage of the protests and disturbances taking place in the streets. The threat has been located on a website linked to the environment of the Islamic State terrorist group, according to several media outlets.

The document, titled Call to attack police and protesters, is an information alert from the Cybersecurity Coordination Office sent to the Secretary of State for Security, which reports to the Interior Ministry. The text contains a publication circulated on a jihadist forum mentioning Spain, France, Italy and Portugal as possible scenarios for the attacks, with their authors urging the exploitation of mass gatherings to attack participants and the officers responsible for maintaining public order.

The messages thus encourage carrying out attacks using explosives, bladed weapons and vehicle rammings, and even promote suicide attacks. The jihadists consider that clashes between police and protesters constitute an opportunity to act, since officers become easy prey during the disturbances. The alert was sent to the Secretary of State for Security after specialists detected these messages during their surveillance of digital spaces linked to extremism.
