MADRID, Spain – The autonomous city of Ceuta has experienced its worst night of vandalism since the mass entry of migrants on 30 July, with three vehicles set ablaze, a fire in the hillside and violent altercations among migrant groups, police and fire services have confirmed. According to sources from the police and the Fire Extinction Service, intentional burnings of both vehicles and containers occurred in various parts of the city overnight, marking a significant escalation in unrest that has simmered since the unprecedented border breach in late July.

Firefighters were called to attend to three separate vehicle fires, one in the Polígono area, another in Hadú and a third in the Cría Caballar zone, while up to three containers were also set alight in other locations. Authorities have not yet determined the perpetrators of these acts. In addition, fires were reported in the hills surrounding the city, specifically in illegal migrant settlements, particularly in the Arroyo de las Bombas area within the Príncipe neighbourhood, where makeshift shelters and belongings were consumed by flames.
Police forces were also compelled to intervene in several fights between migrants at Trampolín beach, as well as in the vicinity of the Polígono area, the latter occurring shortly before one of the vehicle fires broke out. The Unified Association of the Civil Guard has denounced a complicated night, reporting that one officer sustained a shoulder injury after being struck by a stone while responding to one of the fires. The association emphasised that these are not isolated incidents and called for the urgent reinforcement of security and emergency devices in Ceuta, warning that the situation remains volatile and that security forces are operating under mounting strain.
Three Migrants Arrested for Robbery and Assault on Off-Duty Officer in Ceuta
The violence marks a deterioration in conditions since the mass arrival of tens of thousands of migrants on 30 and 31 July, most of whom returned voluntarily to Morocco in the following days, though thousands remain in the enclave. The continued concentration of migrant populations in coastal and hillside settlements, coupled with limited resources and growing tensions with local residents, has created an atmosphere of fragility that authorities are struggling to contain. The latest incidents underscore the challenges facing Spanish security forces as they seek to restore order while managing the residual migrant population and addressing the underlying pressures that have made Ceuta a persistent flashpoint in Europe’s southern border.
