BARCELONA, Spain – A 36-year-old repeat offender has been arrested in Barcelona following a year-long violent robbery spree specifically targeting elderly women. The suspect, whose criminal campaign spanned from July 2025 to July 2026, was apprehended while attempting to carry out another attack following several days of intensive police surveillance.

Investigators revealed that the man meticulously selected his victims, focusing exclusively on women between the ages of 60 and 80 who were perceived as physically vulnerable. He would stalk his targets for hours to memorize their daily routines, waiting for the precise moment they entered their apartment building lobbies or stepped into elevators to strike. Authorities noted that this calculated strategy was designed to exploit victims with a limited capacity to resist, thereby minimizing his own risk and ensuring a swift escape.
The criminal activity was sustained continuously over the course of a year, with the suspect eventually expanding his operational radius from the city of Barcelona to the coastal municipality of Malgrat de Mar. This geographic mobility initially complicated efforts by law enforcement to link the various incidents to a single perpetrator. Once the thefts were committed, the suspect quickly fenced the stolen jewelry—primarily gold chains, bracelets, and rings—at buying and selling establishments across the Barcelona metropolitan area. This rapid liquidation of assets converted the stolen goods into untraceable cash and stripped the items of any identifying characteristics, making recovery by the victims nearly impossible.

The arrest underscores the persistent challenge of repeat offending in the Catalonia region. The issue was further highlighted in May when regional police dismantled an organized ring of 85 repeat offenders targeting public buses, a group that collectively held hundreds of prior police records. Beyond the financial loss, the violent nature of these robberies inflicts severe emotional distress on elderly victims, as the stolen items are often cherished possessions kept for decades. The prevalence of such attacks in residential sanctuaries like building entrances and elevators has significantly exacerbated public anxiety, with citizen insecurity currently ranking as the second most pressing concern for Barcelona residents, trailing only behind the housing crisis.
