Police investigate chemical attacks against Ceuta residents during peaceful protest
CEUTA, Spain – National Police are investigating chemical attacks carried out against a group of Ceuta residents during a peaceful protest, after migrants threw bottles containing turpentine and other liquids at participants as the march passed through the Villajovita neighbourhood. The citizen mobilisation began around 7:30 p.m. from the Cristo bridge, heading towards El Trampolín and Benítez beaches, where groups of people who arrived during the mass entry in late July continue to camp. Carrying Spanish flags and chanting “Invaders, expulsion!”, the demonstrators traversed the main arteries of the autonomous city escorted by police officers.

The organisers of the march defended the peaceful and firm character of the gathering, insisting that any incidents be left in the hands of the police. Prior to the march, dozens of demonstrators had gathered in front of the Government Delegation in Ceuta with 400 carnations under the slogan Without violence, without hate, without racism, seeking symbolism reminiscent of Portugal’s 1974 revolution. During the route, participants chanted “Ceuta is not for sale, it is defended,” directed criticism at Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, and applauded the work of security forces.
The Unified Police Union spokesperson, Ana Alarcón, warned of the increase in tension following the arrival of more than 80,000 people, emphasising that the chemical attacks and the ambush that left four soldiers injured represent a qualitative escalation. In recent days, access to a Red Cross truck has also been blocked and belongings have been burned in the settlements. On the judicial front, eleven of the twelve detainees from the ambush on a Regular patrol in Benzú have been sentenced to two years in prison for assault on authority figures, with the sentence replaced by expulsion to Morocco for five years following an agreement between the prosecution and the defence.

All parties with representation in the Ceuta Assembly, including the PSOE, have signed a joint declaration demanding immediate repatriations from the central government. Meanwhile, the Ceuta Unida platform has called for further protests on Saturday to demand a return to normality. The ongoing tensions reflect the deepening crisis in the autonomous city, where residents and authorities alike are struggling to cope with the aftermath of the mass migration influx while facing increasingly volatile confrontations with irregular migrants.
