Labor Union Accuses Pablo Iglesias’s Madrid Bar Of Workplace Abuse
MADRID, Spain — The Garibaldi tavern in Madrid, managed by former Spanish Deputy Prime Minister Pablo Iglesias, is facing severe allegations of labor abuse and workplace harassment from its employees’ union, highlighting a stark contrast between the establishment’s progressive public image and its internal working conditions.

Pablo Iglesias has been at the helm of the Garibaldi tavern since March 2024. Over the past two years, the establishment has operated from two different locations, with the relocation to its current second venue supported by a crowdfunding campaign that successfully raised 140,000 euros. However, the business is now grappling with a public dispute with its workforce over alleged systemic labor violations.
The local branch of the National Confederation of Labor (CNT) union at the establishment has published a severe public statement condemning the working conditions and accusing the management of failing to uphold the very values the business promotes. Union representatives allege that the staff is subjected to workplace harassment and routinely forced to endure shifts lasting up to 12 and 14 hours. The statement outlines a litany of unresolved grievances that the union claims to have raised over the past year since its formation.
According to the union, management has consistently failed to address basic operational and legal requirements. These unresolved issues include the failure to provide work schedules within the legally mandated timeframes, the absence of a transparent time-tracking system, and inadequate compliance with occupational health and safety regulations. Furthermore, the union accuses the ownership of withholding pending salary payments and pay stubs, failing to clearly define job roles, and neglecting to implement protocols for internal promotion and the strict control of overtime hours. The union also highlighted the management’s failure to adequately plan events and activities, as well as the continued absence of a protocol against sexist violence, despite numerous formal requests from the staff.
No solo explotaba a los trabajadores de su televisión. Así funciona el comunismo caviar: tienes licencia para acusar a los demás de los mismos abusos que practicas.

A significant portion of the union’s statement focuses on the ideological dissonance between the tavern’s public branding and its internal operations. The union argues that it is unacceptable for a business that publicly champions progressive, feminist, and socially transformative values to internally replicate the exact exploitative labor dynamics it claims to oppose. They emphasize that true political coherence is not measured by public speeches, campaigns, or social media positioning, but by the actual treatment of the workers who sustain the business daily. Democratic principles and labor rights, the union asserts, must be exercised within the workplace just as they are advocated for in the public sphere.
Concluding their statement, the CNT representatives expressed deep frustration over the lack of tangible responses or corrective actions from the ownership after a year of negotiations. They asserted that the labor organization itself is not the issue, but rather the unfortunate reality that workers must organize simply to demand basic rights within an establishment that publicly prides itself on defending those very principles.

As the dispute remains unresolved, the union continues to demand immediate structural changes to ensure a dignified, democratic, and safe working environment.
