VIGO, Spain — A unexpected moment unfolded during Spain’s Armed Forces Day celebrations in Vigo on Saturday when the national flag became detached from its mast during the solemn playing of the national anthem, drawing attention from King Felipe VI and thousands of spectators attending the annual military parade.

The incident occurred during one of the ceremony’s most symbolic moments: the raising of the Spanish flag accompanied by the national anthem. As the music played, the flag unexpectedly slipped from the mast, prompting a visible reaction of surprise from King Felipe VI, who presided over the event alongside his daughter and heir to the throne, Princess Leonor.
In an unprecedented gesture, the King subsequently signaled to the standard-bearer of the honor guard to leave the detached flag positioned at the lower part of the podium to continue presiding over the parade, while arrangements were made to address the technical issue with the flagpole mechanism.
The Armed Forces Day parade in Vigo featured more than 3,700 military personnel, 70 aircraft, and over 100 military vehicles representing the Spanish Army, Navy, Air and Space Force, Military Emergency Unit (UME), Royal Guard, and Civil Guard. Among the participants were 344 female service members, reflecting the increasing integration of women across all branches of Spain’s armed forces.
In addition to King Felipe VI and Princess Leonor, the ceremony was attended by Queen Letizia, Defense Minister Margarita Robles, and the Chief of the Defense Staff, Admiral General Teodoro López Calderón. The event showcased Spain’s military capabilities and honored the service of armed forces personnel both domestically and in international peacekeeping missions.
Armed Forces Day, celebrated annually on the last Saturday of May, commemorates the feast day of Spain’s patron saint, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, and serves as an occasion for public recognition of military service and sacrifice. The selection of Vigo, a major port city in Galicia, as this year’s host highlighted the strategic importance of Spain’s Atlantic coastal regions and the Navy’s role in national defense.

Military ceremonies in Spain follow strict protocols regarding flag handling, anthem performance, and ceremonial procedures. While technical malfunctions during public events are uncommon, they are typically addressed discreetly to maintain the dignity and continuity of official proceedings. Defense officials have indicated that a routine review of the flag-raising equipment will be conducted following the incident.
The Royal Household has not issued a formal statement regarding the King’s intervention during the ceremony, though observers noted that his quick thinking helped preserve the symbolic continuity of the event while minimizing disruption to the parade’s schedule.
Spain’s armed forces have participated in numerous international operations in recent years, including NATO missions, United Nations peacekeeping deployments, and humanitarian assistance efforts. The annual parade provides an opportunity to display equipment, personnel, and capabilities to the Spanish public while reinforcing the connection between military institutions and civilian society.
For residents and visitors in Vigo, the parade represented a significant civic event that drew substantial crowds to the city’s waterfront areas. Local authorities coordinated with military organizers to ensure public safety, traffic management, and accessibility for spectators throughout the festivities.

As celebrations concluded, defense officials emphasized the professionalism and dedication of Spain’s military personnel while acknowledging that even meticulously planned ceremonies can experience unforeseen moments. The incident with the flag, while notable, did not detract from the broader purpose of the day: honoring those who serve and demonstrating Spain’s commitment to national defense and international security cooperation.
