MÁLAGA, Spain — National Police have opened an investigation following the discovery of a man’s body in an apartment in the Puerto de la Torre neighborhood of Málaga, where authorities also seized more than 280 kilograms of cocaine, according to sources familiar with the case.
Man Armed With Machete Arrested After Aggressive Incident In Tarragona
The incident occurred Tuesday afternoon around 4:50 p.m. when emergency services received a call requesting assistance with opening the door to a residence in the Málaga neighborhood. Family members of the missing man had reported that they had been unable to contact him and were concerned for his welfare. Emergency responders, including medical personnel, local police, National Police officers, and firefighters, coordinated to gain entry to the apartment.
Inside, responders discovered the body of a 37-year-old man. Judicial protocols were immediately activated, and investigators from the National Police’s Judicial Police Unit began examining the scene to determine the circumstances surrounding the death. According to preliminary assessments, the initial hypothesis under consideration is that the death may have been a suicide, though authorities have emphasized that all possibilities remain under review pending forensic analysis.
In addition to the deceased, investigators found significant quantities of what is believed to be cocaine—estimated at more than 280 kilograms—along with a precision scale and signal-blocking devices commonly used to interfere with electronic surveillance. The presence of these items has prompted authorities to examine potential connections to drug trafficking operations, though no formal charges have been filed at this stage.
“The investigation is in its early phases, and we are proceeding with thoroughness and discretion,” said a spokesperson for the National Police. “Our priority is establishing the facts surrounding this tragic incident while ensuring that all legal procedures are followed appropriately.”
The Puerto de la Torre neighborhood, located in the northern part of Málaga city, is a residential area generally considered quiet and family-oriented. The discovery of such a substantial quantity of narcotics in a private residence has drawn significant attention from local authorities and residents alike.
Under Spanish criminal law, possession of large quantities of controlled substances with evidence of distribution intent can constitute serious offenses related to drug trafficking, carrying substantial penalties upon conviction. The precision scale found at the scene is typically associated with weighing narcotics for packaging and distribution, while signal inhibitors may be used to evade law enforcement detection during illicit operations.
Forensic teams have collected evidence from the apartment, including the suspected narcotics, electronic devices, and materials that may help establish a timeline of events. The body has been transferred to the Institute of Legal Medicine for autopsy, which will help determine the precise cause and manner of death. Toxicology reports and additional forensic analyses are expected to provide further clarity in the coming days.

Málaga province, situated on Spain’s Costa del Sol, has historically been a significant entry point for narcotics trafficked from North Africa and Latin America into European markets. The region’s extensive coastline, busy ports, and proximity to the Strait of Gibraltar make it a strategic location for drug smuggling networks, though law enforcement agencies maintain robust interdiction efforts to disrupt these operations.
“The Costa del Sol remains a priority area for anti-drug operations,” noted a regional security analyst who requested anonymity. “While seizures of this scale are noteworthy, they also reflect the ongoing commitment of Spanish authorities to combating transnational trafficking networks.”
Local officials in Málaga have not issued a detailed public statement regarding the specific incident but have reiterated their support for law enforcement efforts to maintain public safety and address illicit activities. “We trust in the professionalism of our police forces to investigate this matter thoroughly and to protect our community,” said a representative from the Málaga city council.
For the family of the deceased, the circumstances surrounding the discovery have undoubtedly been traumatic. Authorities have indicated that next of kin have been notified and that victim support services are available to assist them during this difficult period. Privacy protocols are being observed to protect the dignity of the deceased and his loved ones.
As the investigation advances, prosecutors will evaluate the evidence to determine whether additional charges related to drug trafficking, illegal possession of controlled substances, or other offenses are warranted. The National Police has indicated that international cooperation may also play a role if the investigation reveals connections to cross-border criminal networks.
“We ask the public to refrain from speculation and to rely on official information as this case develops,” the police spokesperson added. “Our investigators are dedicated to uncovering the truth while respecting the rights of all individuals involved.”
Further updates regarding the autopsy results, forensic findings, and any additional developments in the investigation are expected as judicial authorities proceed with their review.
